Desert Ghosts

The day the rains came again
drops flailed the fallow earth
like chestnuts popping in flames,
mana moulded in the seed’s birth.

Gloaming settled in dewy haze,
a breath of life now returning
to blistered deserts once ablaze
with Ra’s endless fury burning.

These ghosts of gods can be heard
in the gentle whispering sirocco,
shaped by the theatre of absurd
hopes of promise land of Jericho.

The rains will fall, the grass will grow
the river of time will endlessly flow.

This sonnet was written in response to two creative prompts - the first being the word ghost and the second the sentence - the day the rains came.

The sonnet follows the Shakespearean model with three verses and a final two-line refrain. The rhyme scheme is an abab cdcd efef ff structure, and I have included a YouTube video reading above to better express the feeling and tone of the poem.
