My Name is Joe - Original Poem

Hello my name is Joe and I’m fraught
the sun in the sky shivers and moans.
Light refracts my 5G mobile phone beaming
electric dreams into a night alight
with soporific suppression.

Hello, my name is joe.
I once underwent
hypnotic regression,
it turned out I was a ‘#MeToo’.

I’m fraught, with the thought
that life will never be normal -
remain a pill popping session
watering down pain
Into mini-muffin moments.

Every time I see a fucking
Cupcake I want to smash
those tiny pieces of fakery.
Make cake mix of the store window
and a bite-sized memory
of the bakery.

Hello, my name is Joe
I’m not much different than
the guy round the corner you know.
In fact I am the guy round
the corner you know.

I mow my lawn, and collect my kids from school,
sometimes when my wife sleeps I watch porn,
filth that fakes relief to put me to sleep.

Hello, my name is Joe and I’m fraught
with a clown’s mask under-laying reality,
I eat Valium like candy, because it measures me
creating the facsimile “everything is fine and dandy.”

Hello, my name is Joe and I’ve felt dead
since I first caught snow on my tongue.
I’m fraught and have strung out the belief -
this world I weave alleviates the need to feel,
allowing me to inhale and breathe.

Hello, my name is Joe and I’m fraught,
afraid, trapped as a six year old,
longing for the joy that I felt
before I was unmade,
before I was caged.

This poem was created using two prompts, the word prompt of 'fraught' and the fiction prompt 'My Name is Joe'. Like many spontaneous poems I've created before, this kind of flowed out of me, as I rushed to my computer and let the words fall like dominoes.

The poem is personal and does draw from elements of my life, but ultimately Joe is a character completely separate from me. A person born from an amalgamation of experience and imagination.

Also, sparked by these prompts - something so simple as a word and a simple idea for the start of a story or poem - was the catalyst for the first draft which took me no more than twenty minutes to write.

I have since put it through many more drafts and I'm still not 100% happy, but I'm happy enough to share it with everyone on hive.

Thanks for reading.
