Yesterday a child died, did you know?
She had internal injuries, an intense blood overflow..
But alas at the hospital, they had no spare bed,
And a couple hours later, that little girl was dead...
Do tell, what was her crime?
Being born into a country, still backwards at 59?
Oh tell me, because I've run out of ways,
To devise excuses for the many yesterdays...
Yesterdays when tankers collapsed and lit
With fire, our livelihoods out on the streets,
When the fireman was unarmed to quench the fire,
And the goods called out in need, but were doomed never to meet their buyer...
Yesterday when the supposed savior came to steal,
To bruise deeply, where he was meant to heal,
Now our pensions are tied, in houses forfeited by the EFCC,
Instead of smiling at credit alerts, we now stare with grim faces upon Channels TV...
Oh yesterday, when one man dared to speak,
In a country with supposed freedom of speech,
Oh he had much, but his sixty seconds of fame,
Now we chant the words "free" as a prefix whenever we say his name..
Oh is it yesterday where an assembly man, not a god,
After publicly hitting a woman, is given an award..
Or yesterday when in vain we cried,
For our leaders to simply mind,
When our brothers in South Africa died...
Oh is it yesterday, yesterday...
But will we ever learn?
Yesterdays are bad investments yes, but today will we earn?
It's now so imperative, someone has to ask,
For you, for me, for us, will we ever measure up to the task?
Because ultimately Nigeria is ours...

A touching poem, man. Don't even get me started with Nigeria. The more i think about it, the more i see how bleak the future could get here. We'd need some miraculous overhaul from the grassroots.
