HIDING FROM PAIN

I have folded my thoughts
Into nameless things that lie, dead,
In the place I once called memory,
In the empty room I once
Stored old pain like treasures.
I have emptied my desk, so to speak,
And let cobwebs dangle silken threads
From every length of the dreams I once cherished.

I am seated here, watching the moon rise
And the hill glow with the glory of the setting sun.
I am letting in the wind, to feel my skin,
To cackle with the ankles cowries ,
To taste the dust and dance
About my feet in oblivious delight.
I am tasting the sea in the air,
The salty surf and the sweet
Stink of old debris, bobbing bodies
Bloated with dreams that finally sleep
And I can envision here tides
Sweeping the beach clean,
Removing everything that could remind me of yesterday.

I hear my name in the air,
Friendly voices hiding treacherous hearts,
Calling out to my soul in pleas of empathy,
Pleading with the charred skin
That once held a heart, a kind of love
But I have learnt early and I let solitude swallow me
Within its soft bosom, where everything is silent.

I sit within myself,
Letting darkness shroud my gaze from me
As the sun’s heat sloughs off the earth
And the moon’s smile lifts the sea to greet my feet.
I let the silence sing me
New songs that trouble nothing,
That takes nothing from me,
Not even my speech,
Not even my warped thoughts.

I let the dream fade
Like shadows fleeing night,
Their broken bodies crashing
Through the brambles of failed memories.
I watch the pain seek my skin,
Like bullets, like knife wounds,
But I have let the night
Hide my name within her bossom
And I suckle sweet repose,
Empty sugary taste and
Let the milk of silent painless nights
Curdle on my frozen lips.
