I wrote this poem in June 1996 for my best friend. I met her when we were sophomores in high school and we have been friends now for 23 yrs. I consider her like a family member because to me family is not always related by blood, it is how you are there for one another even when family is not. This reminds me of a quote from the TV series Xena: Warrior Princess "Ties That Bind" episode when she and Gabrielle are talking after the encounter with Ares. Xena tells Gabrielle this: "We both have families we are born into, but sometimes families change, and we have to build our own. For me, our friendship binds us closer than blood ever could."
Smart, friendly, caring, true,
A shoulder that’s always there for you,
To lean on when you’re not so cheery,
And rest your head when it grows weary.
The ears that listen to all your peeves,
The eyes that truly see your needs,
The hands that life you up from a fall,
Just the one who is there through it all.
She builds your confidence and self-esteem,
And encourages you to strive,
No matter how hard it seems.
Someone who doesn’t envy you by far,
And will always love you for who you are.
And though you may argue, it is a fact,
Your best friend will pick up where you lack.
So be glad you’ve got her,
‘Cause she’s the best.
The one true companion,
Who outshines the rest.
So salute your best pal,
Stick by your friend,
And you’re sure to be buddies,
Forever, till the end.
