Poker Tactics: Positioning
Your position on the table is one of the most overlooked concepts in beginner’s poker, but it is something that is so important to take into account if you wish to progress further.
Positioning, in it’s basic form, is all about having extra hand knowledge and the ability to use that to your advantage.
To clarify, the optimal positioning is on the button, as you are the last person to make a decision post-flop. This means that you are in a position to know exactly what everyone else's hand strength probably is, before you make your move.
If everyone else has checked on the flop but there’s an Ace and a King on the board, it’s likely no players have either of them as they would have raised if they had. As you’re now last to make the move, you can raise, regardless of what you have, because you know they’re in a weak position and will probably have to fold, assuming you have the Ace or the King.
Likewise, if you’re “under the gun” (first to play), then you have to have a much stronger hand to consider staying in. This is because you have no idea what the players after you may have. If you have pocket 4’s for example, under the gun I’d be tempted to fold, as if you encountered an aggressive re-raise you’d probably have to fold and just lose your chips.
Positioning is one of the most important factors in poker and you should always take it into account when you make your play. Playing when you’re one of the first to make a move is a vulnerable position to be in, so make sure you have a strong hand if you do wish to play into it.
