Poker & Food
When you think about poker, you may not necessarily think about food. However, countless number of home poker games involve food. I remember the times of playing a weekly 1/2 NL Holdem cash game once a week, and everyone who came would always be interested in food. Sometimes we would order out, sometimes I would bring some homemade goodies for the group, and sometimes other players would bring munchies.
Even at casinos, poker rooms usually have their own exclusive menu. You've seen it, people place the order, then the waiter/waitress brings out a table, and the person is eating a club sandwich, or Chinese fried rice, while you are waiting for AA. You know you be looking at what they are eating...and who can blame you, poker is a game of hours, and in those hours, there isn't always time to eat.
Humans love to gamble. And humans love to eat. So why not combine the two?!
Would You Eat Your Hand?
As a Lucksacks AFT segment, we will be sharing with you some simple recipes that you can whip up before your poker game. Whether you're playing at home, online, or maybe even anal enough to take your food to the casino (D.N. does it all the time), these dishes will surely bring you some happiness, even if your poker session doesn't...
Today's Starting Hand
Q7 I think it is about time that we visit the old "computer hand". Why on earth is it called the computer hand?
Apparently there are two stories that go along with Q7 being acknowledged as the computer hand. Both histories involve a computer running out a sequence of hands to calculate how well/poorly Q7 did against other starting hole cards. The more known version of the story has Q7 to be rated as the highest profitable hand. However, the experiment was deemed too small and inconclusive to have any real value. None the less, the name stuck, and today we know Q7 as the "computer hand".
Why would anyone actually want to play Q7, I haven't a clue. It's a shit hand. Luckily today we have a dish that can be called anything but shit...
Today's Dish
Ricotta Tomato Toast - toasted ciabatta bread, topped with creamy whole milk ricotta, and fresh grape tomatoes. Finished off with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, and some basil chiffonade. This dish is one of my favorite dishes, and is my go to snack. If I don't know what I want to make, I always have these ingredients on hand. The recipe is quite simple and takes only a matter of minutes to complete.
Wait, how is ricotta tomato toast and 'the computer hand' the same thing?? Let me tell you...
- If you go by the history, Q7 will win more often than not. Same goes with the toast. Make this dish a part of your regular diet, and you will be happy more often than not.
- Obviously Q7 reminds us of a computer, and to me, a computer is a must have in Bigpchef's life. So is this recipe.
Recipe
- Ciabatta bread
- Olive oil
- Whole milk ricotta cheese
- Grape tomatoes or tomato slices
- Basil
- Balsamic vinegar
- Freshly cracked black pepper
- Sea salt
- Lemon zest
This recipe is a piece of cake, although you will need to take it a bit slow in order to achieve the best presentation. You don't really wanna toss all the ingredients haphazardly onto the bread. Take the ciabatta and slice it into thinner, smaller pieces. Rub one side with olive oil, and cook that side down on a grill pan for 5-7 mins over med heat. Turn over, cook for about 30 seconds, and transfer to plate. Spoon the ricotta cheese on the toast, and top with sliced grape tomatoes. Top the pieces of bread with the fresh basil, drizzle the vinegar, and add dash of sea salt, and black pepper. Finally finish with a few grates of lemon zest.
If anyone would like precise measurements, please don't hesitate to ask.
Pics
You should have these ingredients in your house at all times. I do. I am a chef, but I don't see how that is relevant.
Get those bread pieces ready. No one wants dry, cold bread.
So nicely arranged. They about to get colorful.
Oh man, the goodness is just breathtaking in this photo.
Bon appetite.
