Toki Pona reminds of how chimpanzees were taught sign language. Chimps have limited capacity for how many words they can learn (Washoe was one of the best with 240 words). But what they lacked in capacity, they made up for with creativity. For example watermelon became "big candy" and so on. This expanded their vocabulary a lot.
