2020 DNC Day 4: Joe Biden's Convention Speech Live Stream (August 20)

in #politics4 years ago

Joe Biden's night at the 2020 Democratic National Convention has arrived. Biden, speaking live from his home state of Delaware, will formally accept his party's nomination for president and deliver the final keynote speech of the week. With days of setup from two former presidents, two former first ladies, Jill Biden, and countless others, Joe Biden's moment will be the pinnacle of this virtual convention.

Day 3 Recap

Wednesday ushered in Sen. Kamala Harris formally accepting her party's nomination as Vice President. Harris delivered her remarks live from Delaware in the same spot where Joe Biden will speak tonight. Harris' speech was upbeat at times, and also cutting toward President Trump. The overall theme on Wednesday, as echoed by President Obama's speech as well, was that voting in 2020 against President Trump is a vote to "save our democracy."

As noted by some outlets, President Obama has used the line about democracy being at stake in past elections, such as when referring to the 2017 Virginia Gubernatorial election. Overall, Obama's tone was fairly dark in nature, painting a vision of a lost America without a win for Joe Biden in November.

However, Harris was the star of the evening, and her speech, while rather short by past convention standards, connected the dots and made her much more personable as intended. Speaking of family and faith, two themes that politicians often circle back to when attempting to soften their image and appeal to a broader swath of the electorate, Harris provided a smooth delivery. There wasn't much in the speech that will be memorable beyond Wednesday, but she played it rather safe and left the headlines for Biden to make tonight.
