The most intense election in the most unknown place

in #politics7 years ago

With the New Zealand election just finished, I feel this is an interesting topic to write about.

Basically, the election system works, the percentage of votes counted leads to roughly the same percentage of seats in the house.

This years election was a series of shocking events, that made more drama than the US election. There was so much that I will only do a quick brief of what happened.

As a bit of background, Labour and National are the two major party with all other parties being minor parties that are needed to help either of the main parties to reach a majority of 61 seats in the house. The incumbent being National party with support from Act, United Future and the Maori party.

It looked clear at the end of 2016 that the incumbent National party would win another term, so Prime Minister John Key steps down to give his replacement Bill English time to prepare for the election.
Co-leader of the Green party admits that she committed benefit fraud which causes a massive increase in support as shown in the polls, she then admits she commits election fraud, she then steps down as co-leader and this causes their support to parliament and they become at risk of not reaching the 5% threshold and being kicked out of parliament.
Under 2 months out from the election, Labour leaders Andrew little steps down and Jacinda Ardern as his replacement, this causes massive support which for the first time in a decade, National being at risk of losing the election.
Polls show that United Future will lose its electorate seat, so the leader Peter Dunne steps down, thereby declaring the death of the party.
The whole time the populist party NZ First and its 72-year-old leader Winston Peters is set to be the party to decide which party becomes the government because neither major parties could reach a majority and would need his support.

So many other things happened during this election and to find everything else I would recommend googling it, especially googling election memes.

Next post will be about election results, coalition talks and the drama involved
