A Person and Their Politics

It would be easy to think that if someone believed a certain political way that we could put them into a simple judgmental box and think we've got them all figured out. But people aren't simple and there are many layers and political beliefs alone do not encapsulate all that a person is or is capable of.

Who we are as people is deeper than our political affiliations

There could be a significant amount of brainwashing or propaganda that went into them forming those views in the first place, wouldn't they be a victim then and shouldn't we have sympathy that they are so lost? But politics makes us hate people too easily.

A person’s essence isn’t confined to their worldview

Some people will vote for a political candidate because of one simple issue, they don't care about the whole party policy, but one thing is important to them and they found a candidate willing to supposedly offer them what they are looking for and so they've got their vote. Thinking that the voter subscribes to every word the politician says is another judgement being made on voters that can be an ignorant one and misplaced because of how many different positions and policies there are that one candidate represents.

Reducing someone to their political leanings ignores their depth

When it comes to helping people and doing good, you might be surprised at seeing ppl do good things who you would assume never would. When fires happen or floods and you see people come together, because politics don't matter at that point, they need to save their animals, save their families, save their property, and look after their communities. People might let you down with their political beliefs, but they might not let you down when you need to be saved from a burning building, or someone has broken into your home in the middle of the night, or in thousands of other life circumstances where people can walk in kindness and help others despite disagreeable politics.

No single ideology defines a whole human being

You cannot even get 100 of the same voters together and have them all identically agree on every issue.

So a political ideology itself cannot represent all of what or who people are.

There’s always more to someone than how they vote and when it comes to a person’s heart, it should be easy to agree that their experiences and human values possibly beyond politics.

Sort:

I think I agree with you but only 98% of the time... there's a tiny fraction of people that if they tell you one thing they believe on, one political point they white knuckle, you know the rest.

it's easy to assume, i like to leave room for people to surprise me and i hope they do lol
