Distractions Instead of Responsibility With Cost of Living

In both criminology and sociology it is well documented that whenever economic conditions deteriorate, with inflation or recessions etc, we can expect to see a rise in anti-immigration sentiment from the people. It is anticipated and has been seen that people become more territorial, they don't know who to blame for the problems that they are facing so they place blame elsewhere.

Scarcity mindset

social disorganization theory

When things decline economically it has been seen that crime will increase, more people are going to look to do things to get what they need to survive. This might even bring about weakened community structures and a breakdown of overall social cohesion depending on the hardships faced.

Then you get political leeches who come along and capitalize on this set of circumstances and even work to amplify those anti-immigration sentiments. This works to reinforce public fears and overall tensions with groups. If people think there isn't enough for them, then they worry about someone else taking what they need.

You aren't going to easily find political voices who suggest that there is enough to go around, or that we would all be better off if we worked together in a creative and helpful manner. It is usually the opposite.

Given that this is usually the trend that we see arise because of the economic conditions, you can see then where things might be going and how the economic (failure) of it all pushed society in that direction.

But not everyone is going to react in a scared manner, for some it brings their communities together in solidarity. It can help to employ empathy for other humans, regardless of what country they might be from, and to consider that they too might be facing struggle and by causing them further struggle it likely isn't going to reduce your own.
