The two divisions in this country (working class/"flyover country" and the urban/progressive parts) is mutual hatred. That said, most Americans are united not because of the economy but because of a strong undercurrent of nationalism in the United States. Americans are reared to believe in either a continuously progressive nation or a belief in a god fearing shining city on the hill that sustains a virtuous middle class. The key here is that Americans of all stripes have an ingrained nationalistic belief in a certain destiny for their country. It is different for most other countries that are united by culture or ethnic background.
