I have just come from the holidays in Japan. Apart from the culture, food, ambience and people there is one thing I miss the most- cleanness. Most of the places I visited were sterile clean. Despite the visible lack of bins in the streets there was absolutely no rubbish anywhere. Everyone seemed to clean after himself and mind to not make a mess. I noticed straight after landing in Japan there is no custom of eating and drinking in public places, especially on the public transport such as metro or buses. Organisation and order are deeply-rooted into the Japanese culture making that island one of the best places to live on earth.
After my holiday I started seeing the 'rubbish problem' all over my city. Even though I was aware the UK is not a clean place I did not realise how bad people's habits are. There seems to be not a single street without a litter. The rubbish appears on the pavements even a few minutes after council's cleaning service does the job and what is the worst there seems to be no public objection against litterers and slobs. The most frustrating are Friday and Saturday nights when the youth goes out to the pubs to get drunk. The whole town gets covered with take-away leftovers, vomit and trash. The government as well as local authorities here in Scotland seems to not see or address the problem consenting people to turn the streets into a city dump.
Do you think the new legislation and hefty fines would resolve that problem? How does the 'rubbish situation' looks like in your place?
