democracy?

in #politics7 years ago

Here's the real question: If there's so little difference between having an elected government in place and having the state run by civil servants instead (which is what the article means by "being without a government"), then... how democratic are our liberal democracies, anyway? Do elections really matter in the first place?
(spoiler alert: they matter a bit, but not much)

Democracy is, as far as I am concerned, a farce. However, I need to qualify: I live in South Africa. We have a democratically elected government, but oh, so corrupt. The majority of voters in our country are uneducated, rural people. Many of them have never learned to read or write. These people are being intimidated to vote for the "right" party. After the first "free and fair" election that we had after apartheid, the ANC came into power, based on wild and wonderful promises. Almost immediately, corruption set in. (I am not claiming that the previous regime was without corruption - where there are politics, there is corruption.) However, this new ANC corruption was different. I will not go into the details - you can read about that in countless headlines in the news. However, now we are living with the phenomenon of "State Capture", with our president, Jacob Zuma, and the notorious and very powerful Guptas as the main roleplayers. Still, the "great unwashed" stands by their government.

Conclusion: democracy can only work if every voter can make an educated vote, and where there is no intimidation involved beforehand.

Democracy is the best

Every political system looks better on paper than in practice.

Maybe we should start a smart contract driven world government ...

that's the goal. decentralised governance is part of the movement of crypto.

To my own way of knowledge democracy is wow

difficult for me to conclude in some words about democracy but only one question than why today our world most economies are defaulters people are poor governments impose so many taxes no jobs so many other problems I am not against democracy but but today world are not democratic

i heard this one in Bosnia>

When people of some remote mountin village heard about democracy for the first time, they gathered and asked their imam (priest) to explain the new word to them.

while standing on his high minaret, imam told them>

Imagine if i pull down my pants and start peeing at you from above.
Well democracy means you re also allowed to pull down your pants, and pee on me.

also, speaking of elections, with so much at stake (for example, having a power over army with largest budget on planet) it would be foolish to believe that one who has the power to rig it, wont do it because of morality and dedication to democracy principles.
