An example of communism in action would have been early hunter gatherer communities. Communism predates capitalism.
As a government system I don't believe communism can operate in a capitalistic world, of course cryptocurrencies could provide means.
As capitalism progresses to zero point, where the price of goods and services become zero, we will all have access to goods, resources, education, etc. It will be like Star Trek where people have everything they need, the post-scarcity era. Capitalism will bring us back into communism.
Karl Marx even said that communism cannot happen until we enter a post-scarcity era.
