media oppression in Zimbabwe

in #politics7 years ago

The media has generally been the number one enemy of the present government of Zimbabwe and for years from the pre colonial era up to the post independence era, media freedom and freedom of expression and that after expression has been greatly most media companies.

Indeed most media houses in Zimbabwe have suffered a lot especially those that seem like anti government.

The media has been the monopoly of those in power, and the leaders have greatly learnt from the colonisers that once you control the media you control the people, the main block for alternative media in Zimbabwe with Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation taking a monopoly to radio and television waves.

Recently, there was the launch of Kwese TV, and this has seem to be a threat to the government, the result of many bans using the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) to oppress the operating of Kwese but unfortunately the effort went fruitless.

The social media has given a profound opportunity to most people to have their say, which cannot happen with the ZBC.

On Monday, a Newsday journalist,Kenneth Nyangani, was arrested after writing a story " Grace Mugabe donates used under wear" That time again towards elections were journalists are harassed , intimidated for any story that seems like threatening or denouncing the current government.

His charge is that he is a criminal nuisance
