My Political Manifesto
Well, no. I'm not going political. I promise to stick with tech. BUT!
If I ever wind up creating a brand new country from the ground up and I get to shape the whole political system, I think I have a rough idea of how it will be run.
Random Selection.
Seriously.
Looking at the current US system's behavior, I'm beginning to think that there are some serious benefits to random selection.
So here's how it would work: everyone who is a citizen is automatically on The List unless they specifically opt out. Opt out needs to be resubmitted every other year during the selection process.
Representatives are selected for eight year terms, and every other year a quarter of them complete their service and are replaced by randomly selected citizens.
That gives people long enough to become adept at participating in the whole governing process, and with three quarters of the legislators being experienced legislators, transitions should be smooth with some basic training for the newbies.
But, but! How would non-professional politicians be able to handle the running of government?!?!
You know what? Fuck that. It couldn't be worse than what's currently happening.
When random selection might be better than the current system?
Blegh!!!
