Is the Libertarian Party Done? ☠️

in #politics15 days ago

The US Libertarian Party acted as a moral third option to the two-party system that repeatedly screwed over the people and constantly expanded government.

In 2012, they got 1% of the vote. In 2016%, when the country was faced with the two most undesirable choices in modern history, they got 3.3% of the vote.

But they started a terrible trend of nominating weak, centrist candidates, failing to make a strong case for why having a viable third option even matters.

As a consequence they only got 1.2% in 2020. But then it got worse. Enter Chase Oliver.

In 2024 the LP nominated an even worse candidate: weak on the issues that really matter (even weaker than the GOP candidate on many things!), weak on building coalitions and getting the message out, wasting time on "um actually" defenses of horribly corrupt government agencies.

So what did he get this election? 0.4% 💀

What's worse, RFK, who dropped out of the race to join Trump and explicitly told people not to vote for him, still got more votes.

The Green Party did too. Despite getting a fraction of the votes the LP candidate got in 2012, 2016, and 2020, they got more votes in 2024.

Where did libertarians go in 2024?

I guess libertarians were tired of losing harder than before while apologizing for a weak leftist candidate, and opted to try to get at least some of their priorities actually accomplished through a Trump administration (still probably a long shot).

Libertarian ideas have never been hotter or more influential than right now, but they're working their way into the GOP instead of the namesake party.

Will we free Ross Ulbricht? Will we reduce the size of government? Will we lower taxes? Will we deregulate crypto? Will we de-escalate wars around the world? I don't know. I certainly hope we get some of that.

But whatever we get, none of it will be thanks to Chase Oliver and Libertarian Party candidates.

Long live liberty, RIP "Libertarian" Party. 🪦

Terrible candidate for this year. The party has been shite at representing what actual libertarians believe for the past 10-20 years IMHO. They have been too fixated on trying to figure out how to win instead of just soldiering on with the idea of freedom.

Agreed, this last one was just finally a step too far.
