@jasonrussell thank you for doing this. Awesome. It's really sad though how many people submit stuff but don't read your post.
You specifically stated, "must be a person as the subject" and the original work must be submitted by the photographer or the model".
Very few of your entries meet this. I see animals as the subject, pictures of other peoples original artwork and photos where the person is not the predominant subject.
I thought maybe this definition of a portrait from wikipedia might help those thinking of submitting.
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.
Also.. food for thought.. if you take a picture of a statue, did you capture the likeness of the person or did the sculptor capture the likeness of the person? I know you said pictures of humans only so this really shouldn't matter, but a curious point to ponder. It is a lot harder to photograph a real person than a statue.
Portraits to me are always very interesting! Great points! I'm going to add that definition now! I should have thought of that before! and i see stuff all the time, not just on this post were it is obvious said person did not read the post, so i'm not surprised by this! Thanks for the comment!
Your welcome. I ran my own photo studio and specialized in portraiture for many years. My clients were mostly musicians and models in Hollywood. I appreciate a portrait for the art that it is.
ohhh mannn!!! i would love to see your work!!!
This was back in the early 80's when "hair metal" was the big craze in Hollywood and later the world. Most all models were unknowns at the time, Aspiring actresses and musicians. Some went on to incredible fame, like my ex roommate Tommy Lee, drummer for Motley Crue. I haven't entered the contest but was thinking of digging something up.
I just posted one portrait. Will do another this evening. https://steemit.com/portraitcontest/@internetguy/portrait-of-greg-leon-the-hair-metal-years
