Burmese girl like to put Thanaka paste on their face. Thanakha is a yellowish-white cosmetic paste made from ground bark. It is a distinctive feature of the culture of Myanmar, seen commonly applied to the face and sometimes the arms of women and girls, and is used to a lesser extent also by men and boys.

Great picture! I went to Myanmar and saw many painted faces but never with such intricate details such as this. Very beautiful. And such amazing, happy, smiling people despite the hardships their history and dictators have bred.
Also, apparently Thanaka is great for your skin. Not sure why but my friends and I read about some kind of 'special beauty' paste in a Lonely Planet guidebook that is revered in Europe now as well as Myanmar. We went on a long adventure in Mandalay, searching for this cream. Through all the streets, markets, etc. Eventually we found the shop selling this 'mircle-cream'and it turned out to be Thanaka. One of the girls I was traveling with wore it every day because it was like a socially and publicly accepted mud-mask.
Thank you for the beautiful picture!
I am a man and I like put it on my face. :P
