What I love most about breastfeeding is the fact that there are so many different ways to execute a feeding. Positioning is a learning process. You have to go with what the baby is comfortable with. The first few weeks as you are getting to know your little one you will also notice what they like and what they don't like. The most common breastfeeding position is the cradle hold. The baby feels safe, warm, and what is better than cuddling with mommy and eating at the same time? It doesn't get any better than that!

Cradle Hold
The cradle hold position requires you to cradle you baby's head with the crook of your arm. It is essential that you feel comfortable when breastfeeding. Some mothers feel better using a nursing pillow to help support the baby from the bottom. I like sitting up on the bed and propping myself with pillows. A lot of women like the support of the nursing pillow. It makes it easier to hold the baby, and in my case my baby seemed to love it.

Football Hold
This is what the football hold looks like. In this position you tuck your baby under your arm (on the same side that you are nursing from). The baby should be facing you with her nose leveled with your nipple and her feet pointing toward your back. You can use he nursing pillow for this position as well to rest your arm. This is a good position for women who have had a cesarean section birth because it doesn't put much pressure on your abdomen. In my case, we never really favored this position. It was one of the first ones I tried and my daughter seemed so uncomfortable. The more you breastfeed the more you will know what works for you and your LO and what doesn't.
Reclining Position
This is by far our FAVORITE position! You get to relax while nursing the baby! If you pay close attention o baby's hunger cues you can even feed the baby before she is fully awoken. Pillows will be your best friend while breastfeeding. For this particular position, you can place a pillow under your head and shoulders, and one between your knees. The goal is to keep your back and hips aligned (and for you to be comfortable of course). The baby should be facing you, you should draw him/her closer and cradle the head with the hand of your bottom arm. This position is really easy! The best part is that once you get the rhythm of it, you can take a nap while nursing the baby. The best for middle of the night feedings!
