I still have much to learn about all this, have considered converting some dollars into steem and powering up with some while also keeping some in savings here in the event I may need it in the form of cash in the future. At least I still have time to figure out how that works and what sites are best to do that with, right now it all seems so complicated, so keeping it all here just makes sense at this time

You won't regret powering up. Once you've done it the first time it's quite easy. Keeping SP in savings isn't doing much for you it just sits there, it used to pay good interest now you need to power it up for it to make you money.
