Ulog 85: Making Citrus Vinegar For Cleaning

in #powerhousecreatives6 years ago (edited)

Cleaning out the refrigerator; whether scrounging for leftovers to snack on, making a new recipe for dinner or tomorrow is garbage day, I knew I had to do something with the grapefruits I had purchased a couple of weeks ago and knew we couldn't, or in my case wouldn't, eat. I don't care for grapefruit and Mr Golden D can't eat them anymore due to a new heart medication he is taking and his cardiologist clearly stated, "no grapefruit".

I do not like to waste food and I don't think the world is quite ready for grapefruit cookies yet.

So I remembered that I had seen a video recipe a couple of days prior to this citrus discovery and figured I'd give it a try.

I'm making citrus vinegar for cleaning around the homestead!

I took the two grapefruits I had plus half of a lemon I had just cut that morning to make some lacto-fermented soda and cut them up; rinds and all, and out them into a half-gallon sized mason jar. I added 1/4 cup of organic pure cane sugar, then filled the jar up with filtered water. I used spring water.

Poured the sugar over the fruit.

I'll be leaving this on top of my refrigerator; each day removing the coffee filter and stirring, with a wooden spoon, the mixture. I'll do this for about two weeks, give or take, until the fruit stays closer to the bottom and a SCOBY begins to form on the top of the liquid/vinegar.

After that, the vinegar should be done and I can use it clean.

They'll be good for cleaning stuff...and yes, I don't really think the world is really ready for grapefruit cookies yet. But who knows, you may try :P I would eat them, seriously.

An ingenious idea to transform without to waste the fruits!

Thanks for the inspiration. I always find some old citrus fruits in the fridge... now I know what to do with them. Really good idea. 🤔

@goldendawne, It's something informative, it's always great if we can use some ingredients in other work instead of just throwing it away like a waste. Keep up the experiment. 👍

What a great idea! I didn't realize you could make vinegar this way as well! Brilliant, on my list now :) Thanks @goldendawne

Such a great idea! I am totally going to try this soon. I've been experimenting with fermenting more foods to eat, but need to try other things like this, too! Thanks for sharing! You'll have to update us when it's ready if you get the chance, too. Hope the hubs is healing up well!

cider vinegar, I think, right? Actually, you have given me an idea because that is the best vinegar. Let's see when apples are cheap, I may give it a go! I am always needing vinegar for pickles and prefer the flavour of the apple as opposed to the white wine which is really quite harsh.OMG, @goldendawne, this is unlikely to happen with grapefruit in my house - it ends up in marmalade! It might happen with apples and then we'd have apple

Thanks for this

ahhhhh
sounds so easy to make
Must give this ago so i can let go all those store bought chemical filled cleaners :)
Will waiting to see what happens at the end of the two weeks :)

Oh! Great to know the process. Thanks :)

No matter how I eat grapefruit I just don't like it; same with turnips, but marmalade I do like

Very good just squeeze them in and relish the juice, what nectar.

Wow, i am amazed at the world. This is a great idea for those grapefruits my mother insists i have. We don't like them, too sour for me.

@andiekins and @lightfootedbird!

Waste not want not, put the grapefruit to good use what a lovely refreshing smell it should have when using.

What a cool idea for an all natural cleaner! Hope it works well for you, and...

Way cool. I will have to show @luvbnamome this cleaning option

Lets try it! Although lemon cookies are good so maybe grapefruit ones are too? Lol

Ohhhh dang I was thinking a grapefruit drink but vinegar for cleaning is an excellent use so as not to waste also!

Eish! Me and grapefruit don't go together at all.
My gran used to say that if something is bitter it's good for you!
I just cannot seem to get the stuff across my tongue and I am not going to have my tongue removed in order to eat grapefruit.
Och No, grapefruit is an Och no!
But as a cleaning agent it sounds good.
Blessings!

I bet it smells good too. Good idea.

Cool😃

Love it and will certainly make some now @goldendawne. We bought a natural citrus cleaner some time ago ~ Will be great to make it ourselves now. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

I think I would eat that fruit and drink the liquid. 😁

This is great. I use vinegar for several things! It would be nice if it had a more pleasant scent! 😁

I didn't know this recipe existed. Thanks for sharing.

Wasting food is not so good. I really love that you don't like wasting any. I loved you found a way to take advantage of the grapefruits to make something useful like citrus vinegar. Regards!

This is the first time that I have seen how vinegar was made! Thank you for sharing this with us!

@goldendawne,

A Science Fair Project! I'll watching to see how your alchemy turns out. :-)

Very creative. I love it.

I do not like to waste food and I don't think the world is quite ready for grapefruit cookies yet.

I tried to think of what grapefruit cookies might taste like, and I can't. I love grapefruit, but I can't imagine a grapefruit-flavored cookie. I don't think I could eat that. lol
