My recent acquisition of a decent amount of fresh maple wood got me thinking...
These are my usual wood processing tools, (the silver is just always on me and part of the ongoing #pocketsilverchallenge )... A 2 pound camp hatchet and a solid fixed blade knife. The pair work quite well together for small logs and branches. However, almost all of the wood I just got is over 12 inches around and most of it is about 24-36 inches long.
I only burn wood for fun in a backyard fire pit. Not to keep the house warm in the winter or any other more essential purpose. With that said, I think I will be picking up a decent splitting maul or axe for future use. At the price I was paying for wood to burn it won't take long for even a middle to high quality axe to pay for itself and I will have added a solid tool to my gear.
Not the most exciting thing for my little "urban homestead" just something that my family and I will enjoy the use of and that will save me some money in the long run.
Good idea. Plus, an ax will come in handy during a zombie apocalypse!
Can't disagree there! Maybe I'll get a double bit axe and pretend I'm a Viking!

Thanks!
