RE: A Warning: Why I Don't Use Steemit

in #privacy8 years ago (edited)

No matter where you post content on the internet, you cannot remove it with the guarantee that nobody has that content and can repost it anywhere and everywhere. Every time I post something on steemit it is within the framemind that it will be online forever.

If you are posting intimate information on YouTube and Facebook under the illusion that you can control your own privacy, realise that those platforms still have your content on their servers after you "remove" it and you've signed over the ownership of that content to them so they can do what they want with it.

Sort:

That's not true, beanz.
You DO have control over who sees stuff on Facebook and YouTube. As I said, I know SOMEONE has it. That's not the point. It is ACTIONABLY private in immediate terms of social relevance. It's not ideal, but it's worlds away from how Steemit is currently. That difference makes all the difference.

So no. It matters.

I never said it doesn't matter. My point is nobody should be putting intimate information that they would want removed later on the internet. Period. At least steemit is honest about the danger. You just don't post anything you would want to remove. The same goes for other sites but the problem with them is they are fooling you into believing that content is yours to remove/hide when it isn't. Once you post it on their site you've signed over all rights. The privacy they offer you is a delusion.

While steemit is honest about the lack of privacy, those who are recommending it, such as the person my dad sent, AREN'T.

Thus my response to spotlight the issue.

I want people to stop advocating steemit as being another facebook.

It ISN'T.

And until and unless it has maidsafe features, it's technically WORSE in terms of privacy.

It's more accurate that it's moot a pertinent issue in their mind.

So I want to make a big stink about it so those being introduced are aware and don't screw themselves.

And maybe he doesn't realize it either.
