I think this is a huge gap and you have actually highlighted one of the things I see as a challenge on Steemit and in the social media: people don't know how to use tags (myself included most of the time) and if they do, which tags work on this platform, and which outside and which are universal.
This brings me to my next point: The transition from the mainstream social media to Steemit is not easy and is not intuitive. It's hard work, so IMO, much needs to be done to streamline those processes. Especially, also IMO, as there is little incentive - with the level of Steem and Alexa ratings - in joining the platform. Oh, and there's the added confusion of tribes....and SMTs.
Whatever strategy you embark on, I think, needs to bear these challenges in mind.
