This post is a follow up to my post from Thursday My New Retention Initiative - Pick 5.
One of the comments I got in that post from @paulag reminded me that not everyone has time to go out curating, let alone to wade through the Introduceyourself tag. So I thought, since I am doing some of the curating myself anyway, maybe people would find a Daily Digest useful. I will use this to share with you the Five New Steemians I have selected for the day, and a little bit about why I selected them, with a link to their post. You can use my summary to decide for yourself if you want to visit them or not.
I hope to make this a daily post, although it might be three times a week, it might be every day, I might do it twice and then realize I just don't have time. We will see how it goes.
The Process
Thanks to some wonderful Query work by @carlgnash which connects to the SteemSql database maintained by @arcange I was able to create my own query to find me the following posts:
- Only search posts in the Introduceyourself tag.
- Only return posts which have been created in the last 24 hours.
- Only return posts where the author's rep is between 25 and 35.
- Ignore posts where the reward is $10.00 or higher.
This helps me narrow down my results, helping get rid of some, but not all, of the tag spam that takes place in the introduction tag. Today (the first day using the query) I was left with 81 posts.
I am using LinqPad to connect to the SteemSQL Database, the results of my search look like this:
That box on the bottom right is my search results. You can see that I get the Link, and the body of each post that meets the parameters I set. I then go down manually through the list and open those that look promising. This means they aren't just a few words, they are not obviously tag spam, and they are in English (Sorry, it's the only language I know). Those that show promise I open in my browser, giving myself a bunch of tabs of potential. Today there were 16 that I opened and did not immediately dismiss.
From there it's a matter of manually curating through those finalists until I get it down to those I want to promote and keep up with.
This will Always be a manual process. I will not be creating a Bot or anything to do this work for me. The best way to promote Steem, and Engagement, is to do the work yourself, so that is what I intend to do.
I hope you will help me welcome these Steemians to the Platform! If you would like to support this work, please click on some of the links below and visit new Steemians to make them welcome!!
Today's 5
Today's 5 New Steemians you should get to know include a homeschooling mom, living in her dream home, An artist from Central Florida with a creative talent toward horror, a 26 year old Bahrainian music enthusiast, A shy nurse who prefers the dark, and a marine biologist who is about to get a taste of a different kind of whale!
We'll start with @countrykerrie, a Homeschooling Writer Mom of 5. Kerrie is into a lot of things, you will need to check her out. Kerrie is a published author, magazine writer, blogger and proofreader, and oh yeah, she also likes to share recipes. I have a feeling Kerrie will find a home at @thewritersblock fairly quickly! Check out her blog if you'd like to know more!
Next up we have @terrorfirma who announces himself as A monster and nature loving artist from Florida. Terrorfirma shares some of his very creative and unique art with us in his introduction post, as well as his love of plants and travel. If you'd like to use one of his pieces for a desktop, or maybe a Steem banner image, just let him know!
Our third new Steemian today is @kosh7 a well traveled Psytrance DJ from Bahrain. He comes to us with a wave and a Friendly Introduction. Kosh shares a map of the 43 places he has visited so far on his world journey. He's been teaching in Thailand and offers to share his music as well as knowledge of South East Asia in his blog.
Next up, let me introduce you to a Shy Nurse who is ready for her intro, @mayliberty. Here she is with her favorite tree, in the dark, which apparently she likes, being a night owl. May is a night shift nurse and caregiver, taking care of the elderly and sick. Her goal here is to share a Steem novel, called Good Nurse, Bad Nurse. There's surely some interesting stories to be shared here!
Finally for today, let's meet @thomasjmitchell an expedition guide, marine biologist and amateur photographer. Check out his post at My Introduction - World Ocean Adventures. He's originally from Australia, but has been in Canada for seven years. He introduces himself with some cool pictures of some of the whales he has encountered. Let's make sure he is introduced to some of our resident Steem Whales!
That's the five for Saturday, December 2nd. This is by no means an exhaustive list! There are loads of new Steemians who deserve to be checked out in the introduction posts. I encourage everyone to go and check some of the entries in this tag out for yourselves!
I hope these Steemians will find a warm welcome to the platform, and look forward to their contributions as they learn the platform and grow with us! Please join me in welcoming them all!
Thanks for reading! I hope you have enjoyed the first edition of the Daily 5. Please sound off in the comments below and let me know if you like this format, or if there is anything you would like to see me change as I move forward.

@mikepm74 you got the ultimate ideas to sort out the fresh 5 every day. Hope you know me as I have been featured in your December 19th The Fresh 5 Post. I landed here via that post and so many interesting stuff to read here. It's a great honour for new steemians to receive this kind of appreciation.
Hey - what a great project, love it!
I had similar thoughts about boosting the #introduceyourself area in the last days and therefore created @welcoming where I am resteeming promising new accounts. My criteria are kinda the same like yours.
Check out details here: Lets make #introduceyourself great again! We all will benefit!
Maybe following @welcoming can help you not to miss any promising newbies. And vice-versa your posts might help me to not miss any!
Greets!
Heya @theaustrianguy! Thanks for having a look at my post! I am pretty excited about the prospects of helping newer steemians find their way around here. And if I can help curators wade through the muck and find good people to follow, so much the better!
I will open your post up right now in another tab (can't promise how quickly I will get back to it, but will for sure check it out!) Love knowing other people have come to the same conclusions and are working to welcome people to steem!
Think we have the same thoughts for big parts :)
Great, let me know what you think about it, when you are done reading it!
@mikepm74 This is a great initiative you're working on. Welcome to all! :)
Thanks Coin! I appreciate the kudos! I hope it will get more people interacting with newer Steemians so we can build this community of ours to the level of greatness it deserves!
Thank you for Using #promo-steem tag, Promote steemit by inviting your friends and your family!
Oh my goodness. I just seen this right now. What a wonderful shock. Thank you for mentioning me. I really really appreciate it!
I will be following you and your blog from now on. Steem on my friend.
Thank you for putting together an intro post worth including! I'm looking forward to finding out a little bit about Good Nurse, Bad Nurse.... and maybe there is a little bit of Naughty nurse in there too? hahaha
I kid... maybe.
Welcome to Steem! If you need anything, please feel free to hit me up in any of my posts and I will be happy to help out!
Thank you for your time... that's funny Naughty nurse! haha
Thanks for the help...
this is awesome....its like you are my new very own curator..... I have read all of the posts you found. Nice work, and nice work using the data too
I really enjoy using the data to narrow the post pool to work in. It helps a whole lot!!! Curating by Query, thanks in no small part to @carlgnash. I will attempt to continue getting better, and learn a little more each day about how to mold these queries and the data to suit my needs! World conquest here I come!
hahaha
This is super cool! I love this format and basically being introduced to my new friends! I don't usually touch the introduceyourself tag, it's tough to find actual new interesting steem peeps in there. This is great, thank you!
I'm very glad you find it useful! I'll admit, it is not the fastest project I have taken on in Steem. I spent about an hour and a half on today's version. I am not sure I can dedicate that much time to it every day. But I will try!
Thanks for being here @aussieninja! Happy to have you!
I honestly can't even imagine... there is so much data on Steem, which is why these posts are so incredibly useful to the people who are not you. I really appreciate it. I'm still very new and still haven't found my groove, but these are the articles I'm probably most excited about at this point.
Thank you again!
Thank you for the shout-out! I really appreciate it!
You are most welcome Kerrie! Welcome to Steem! Hope you enjoy your time here!
If there is anything the community can help you with, feel free to let me know and I will do my best to help you, or get you in touch with someone who can!
kudos to you mike for taking the initiative to do this! yeah not everyone has time to do curating and read posts especially those from the newcomers. once again kudos to you bro! ill take a read of their posts now. :)
thanks andy! Make the people who make a genuine effort feel welcome! That's the goal.
We can encourage retention through interaction. I hope my small part in that helps!
It definitely does bro! I should follow this practice of yours of looking for newcomers. Such a great initiative and it helps the community tremendously!
Anyone who has time should take a few minutes to look for at least one new person to interact with as often as possible. It is by reaching out to the people who have been in the platform less time than us that we improve retention and build a strong community!
Oh wow I didn't realise we could query steem db. Nice post :)
there's a lot of really cool stuff you can do with the database. Check out @paulag's blog for some cool illustrations of what the blockchain can show you!
Thanks m8 I will check it out now :)
Thanks for your update post on promo-steem I appreciate your post @mikepm74 ✌✌
promoting Steem is all of our duties! And part of promoting the platform is retaining new users! I think it's a mission we should all encourage!
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for your reply really you're kind really I appreciate your comments keep it up bro @mikepm74 steem on ✍🙌
That's the kind of curation steemit need. Great idea, good realization, keep work on it!
Thanks @airmatti! I think it is useful both for those who have been here for awhile to see new people, as well as for the new people coming in to get a little bit of extra attention for putting in the effort of making a good intro post!
Thanks for reading!!
Actually the post was a lot better
I'm not sure I know what this means. what post is better?
