6 Fun Facts You Must Know About Sabah

in #promo-steem7 years ago

Most Malaysian know Sabah and Sarawak (East Malaysia) is unique, but to what extent? Today I would like to share about 6 Fun Facts you might not know about Sabah. For Sarawak, I would say we are quite similar only the language is slightly different.

1. We Speaking "Bahasa Melayu (BM)" differently

Unlike our West Malaysian friends, they have a Slang when comes to speak BM. Even thou it's our national language BM, the slang is not National. Haha!! Sabah BM is more "Baku", some say its more "Original", for the Sabahans we speak the way it is since the "beninging" of time. Whenever I am in West Malaysia for work, I never change my slang; so to some extent, they would ask me "Kite dari mane? you from Indonesia?" ...hmmmmm

2. Learn the Sabah Slang

When I was an active Tour Guide years back, I always share to tourist about Local words, it helps them in Shopping, Travelling around and of cause doing the bargaining skills at Markets. For those coming to Sabah holiday soon, do learn the local words, the locals really do appreciate when outsiders speak the local language.

3. Everybody is a Boss

You go coffee shop, retail outlet, supermarket and street vendors we all call each other boss!!! its the way of calling to each other, it's not that you are the boss of something, its the sense of respect between each other. The right way of saying is Bosku. True Story: Last year I was called to bring a big Indonesia Film Crew around Sabah for 1 Week, when we went to Sandakan for a Shoot, I speak locally Bosku to the Drivers, vendors, and people there, the crew was shock to hear Bosku. They explain that in Indonesia especially in Jakarta, they also use the same term calling Bosku - there you go our similarity with the Indonesian.😂We even have a Parody Song Bosku (Yellow by Coldplay)

4. Sabah Time

Again, when I was a Tour Guide back then, I guided countless of Groups from West Malaysia, most of them are first time land in Sabah. For your info, our sunrise and sunset is different timing from West Malaysia. Our Sunrise is between 0600 - 0605hrs, and our sunset is around 1800-1805hrs (sometimes earlier). So people who not used to it were shocked actually, that's why most Sabahans wake up early, and Happy Hour early too to enjoy the sunset drinking your 🍻

5. Sabah is Expensive (Literally)

Sabah Airport KKIA, being the 2nd busiest airport in the Nation after KL, Sabah apparently is the 2nd most expensive cost of living in the whole of Malaysia. Properties are expensive after Kuala Lumpur (KL), A good Lunch Meal ranges from RM10-RM25 per person (depending on Area and Type of Food) Drinks is around RM4.50 (Kopi C Ping - At Shopping Mall Food Court). So before you decide to move here and work, make sure your employers pay's you well.

6. However - We are blessed with Cheap Booze 😁

LOL. Sabahans knows how to party actually, it comes with alcohol beside. Surprisingly we can get cheap alcohol from the Kopi Tiam (Coffee Shop) in the Sub-Urban areas. This is where most of it is the residential area located, we can get around RM9 to RM15 for 3 cans of beer (1 set) (depending on brand). If you come to Sabah we have lots of Kopi Tiam opens only at 4pm til late for the Thirsty Drinkers and they can order 10-20-30-40 sets of beers depending on the crowd on the table.
