Challenges of renting an apartment as a single lady.

in #proofofbrain3 years ago

Women at large have always faced this issue with letting an apartment, despite the fact we fight for gender equality. I’m just here to vent about the experience I had while looking for an apartment.

I’m sure we have all been asked while viewing a place, “where is your husband”, “are you married?” And the look on their face when you say no.

Now let me tell you about the struggles of renting an apartment without a man, first of you’ll be tagged as not being able to afford it, this could be because they think you don’t earn enough to afford a luxury apartment of your taste or the fact that you get asked multiple times why you want to move. When you don’t like a place your opinions doesn’t matter, it is tagged as choosing a place based on aesthetics or “she’s a woman she don’t understand”.
Another challenge I faced is that you can’t ask a valid question, the look on your realtor face as if they don’t expect a woman to be that smart. Also when you are asking a question and you counter their point, you’re then tagged with the “she is a woman, that’s why she sees it from this perspective”. It’s emotionally draining to feel you’re not wise enough to make decisions.

Most times some landlord don’t even lease their apartment with the reason being “she is a woman, and women are problematic”. To some being “she’s single I want a family”. Sometimes I got canceled off a waitlist reason the realtor refuse to meet with a single lady. I am sure we all have an experience, feel free to share yours below?
