Calcium carbide lamp

Greetings to all. I want to propose that you try this invention that my brother and I used when here in Cuba we lived the “Special Period” stage; the scarcity was the same or the same as it is now, but the electrical interruptions were constant and resounding, sometimes twelve hours passed and sometimes a little more. In the image I show you the “calcium carbide lamp that we invented to light ourselves. It was very good, it lit a lot and lasted all night. To manufacture it, they must use:

  • A piece (15cm) of ¼ diameter metal water pipe
  • A metal container with a screw cap approximately 10cm in diameter
  • Chunks of calcium coal stone

Manufacturing
In a forge, heat one end of the ¼ pipe to leave a very small outlet hole. Then grind the point on a wear stone. In the metal container, make two holes, one in the center with the same diameter of the ¼ pipe to then weld it there and another small hole (1mm in diameter so that the water drips in).
When you have everything ready, place some pieces of calcium carbon inside, place the lid with the ¼ welded pipe, place the lamp in a container with water that covers the carbon deposit up to two centimeters above. When you smell the burning coal, take a match (match) and light the lamp. They will see how it lights up.
