https://kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/ is a great newbie friendly distribution of Linux. Like @ura-soul said, if you don't have windows only applications to care about, switching to Linux is a breeze now days. Installation process is super simple and fast, hardware compatibility is great and always getting better. You can also use virtualisation in many cases, if you do have programs that can only run in Windows.
So, to start it would be good simply download that ISO, and copy it to a thumb drive. You can boot it and play with it right away, even if you don't install it to your drive yet. Just to get an idea.
