UPDATE THREE: PSN users are still reporting issues with the service, with hundreds of gamers saying the service is down and not working.
It's believed that PSN users that are Virgin Media customers are the ones who have been mainly affected by the outage.
Independent website Down Detector has received reports from hundreds of PSN users experiencing issues with the service since around 9am BST today.
At its peak, the outage monitor received reports from 857 PSN users experiencing issues today.
The Ask PlayStation UK Twitter account has been busy responding to customers seeing the 'server maintenance NP-34957-8 error message'.
They have advised a number of potential fixes, such as connection to a mobile hotspot and re-booting the router and the PS4, then reconnecting.
UPDATE TWO: The Ask PlayStation UK Twitter account have tweeted to say they are investigating issues PSN users are experiencing today.
PS4 gamers have flocked to Twitter today to report that PSN is down and not working today.
A large number of PSN affected by the outage said they were customers of Virgin Media.
Responding to the reported issues, the Ask PlayStation UK Twitter account tweeted: "We’re aware that some Virgin Media users are having issues accessing PlayStation Network and we are investigating, thanks for your patience."
Express.co.uk have contacted Virgin Media for comment.

UPDATE ONE: The PSN server status website has just been updated after scores of users reporting that PlayStation Network was down and not working for them.
PSN users have flocked to Twitter today saying they've received 'server maintenance' error messages and a number of those affected have said they're Virgin Media customers.
Throughout the reported issues the PSN server status website has said that services have been running absolutely fine.
And while it still says PSN is running smoothly, it has given a new update.
The official PSN server status website said: "PlayStation™Network services are up and running in your area, but several reports suggest that your local Internet is having problems that might affect your ability to sign in. Contact your Internet service provider for more information."

ORIGINAL: PSN is down at the moment with the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS3 and PS Vita online servers not working for hundreds of users.
PSN is not working for hundreds of users across the world with users reporting sign-in issues and PlayStation Store problems.
Independent website Down Detector has received PSN down reports from users in the UK, Europe and America saying the service is not working.
At its peak, the outage tracker received reports from almost 600 users reporting the PlayStation Network is down.
However, the official PSN server status says service are working fine.
A number of users said they were greeted with a PSN maintenance error message and seeing the NP-34957-8 code.

One PSN user who contacted the Ask PlayStation Twitter UK account was told to contact their ISP, with a number of those affected saying they're customers of Virgin Media.
The PSN user asked: “Is there maintenance on the PS4 network? I'm unable to connect to anything. AGAIN.”
The Ask PlayStation UK Twitter account responded: "Hi there, reboot your router and the console. This should help ^ES".
They later added: "Please contact your ISP as this seems to be trending ^ES".

PSN users have flocked to Twitter in droves to report issues with the service today.
One user said: “So basically @virginmedia has messed up our connection to the PSN servers?”
Another said: “@AskPlayStation Just to let you know some of us UK users are suffering PSN sign-in problems.”
While one said: “So PSN is under maintenance in the middle of the day? At least according to my PS4.”

According to Down Detector, some 43 per cent of PSN users were experiencing sign in problems.
While 29 per cent were having problems with the PlayStation store.
A number of PSN users affected by the outage today have said on Twitter that they're customer of Virgin Media.
One PSN user tweeted: "Anyone on virgin media and it's saying psn maintenance".
While another said: "@PlayStationUK PSN is down. Seems to only affect @virginmedia customers. What's going on? Can't play. It's like the FB issue all over again".
And one added: "Anyone having problems with psn being down, restart your virgin media router turn ps4 offgive it 5 mins and it'll come back".
