Introduction
In 2005, I found myself in Geneva, a city that would become a pivotal chapter in my life. Having transitioned from the hustle and bustle of New York, I was ready for new adventures in Europe. My past as a wanderer, living illegally in various countries, was behind me. Little did I know that Geneva would offer me experiences beyond my wildest dreams.
Early Days in Geneva
Working at the United Nations was a thrilling yet chaotic experience. Digital photography was not yet the norm, so I was constantly running around with rolls of film. The process was exhausting—shoot, develop, print, check, digitize, and sell. It was a hectic cycle, but looking back, it was an invaluable experience that taught me resilience and adaptability.
Cultural Exploration
My quest for the perfect sound introduced me to a fascinating array of individuals. Among them was a community of Indigenous people from Congo. These connections opened my eyes to new perspectives and introduced me to Linux, a tool that would later revolutionize my work.
One of the most memorable friendships I forged was with Rupu, a voodoo master from Congo. Our bond went beyond the typical; we recorded several songs together, blending his traditional sounds with my quest for innovation. It was through Rupu that I had one of the most transformative experiences of my life.
The Voodoo Experience
Rupu invited me to partake in a traditional voodoo ceremony. Being a half-shaman, he introduced me to the mystical world of voodoo. Under the influence of sacred mushrooms, I found myself amidst 13 voodoo masters, in a state of complete awe and fear. Just as I was on the brink of overwhelming terror, someone handed me a guitar. “Friend, we jam here,” they said. And so, we did. The experience was surreal—a blend of spiritual awakening and musical harmony.
Conclusion
Reflecting on my time in Geneva, I realize how much those experiences shaped who I am today. The challenges of film photography, the diverse cultures I immersed myself in, and the profound connections I made have all left an indelible mark on my life. While everyone today may call themselves a photographer, my journey in Geneva was unique and transformative, filled with moments that defined my path.After 40 years I'm remastering thanks to the A.I. all the material i collected in my "quest-around-the-world" now will be available on youtube and spotify.
From a wanderer living on the fringes to a UN photographer surrounded by cultural richness, Geneva was the crucible in which I discovered myself. It taught me that life’s greatest adventures often come from the most unexpected encounters.
