There are the impulsive, or those who act without premeditation, leave the house to go mail with a registered letter and return with the skirt, the purse, taken without any evaluation of the utility, the economic entity. Often then they repent of the purchase or do not use it, because they did not really need it and maybe the article does not even correspond in terms of taste.
Serials and accumulators: the other side of the coin compared to impulsivity, or compulsiveness, the sense of obligation in reiterating a gesture that becomes a kind of ritual: we focus almost always on the same objects and often we become accumulators (bags, shoes, watches, perfumes). They are then those people who would never get rid of accumulated objects even if they never use them as if there were an emotional bond and a real discomfort made of anxiety and panic at the idea of no longer having the object.
Then there are the emotional buyers, those who face a quarrel, a bad day at the office, go out and go shopping as a form of anxiolytic, to quell negative emotions, such as sadness, anger.
The vanities. Here the purchase is totally focused on appearing special. They feel inadequate until the purchase of the head. The purchase of the head gives instead a sense of omnipotence. The “fashion victims " are people who are influenced by the consumerist and advertising push to purchase the last model absolutely essential, but in fact only in fashion.
Then there are the toxic, a term that we use here to put emphasis on those people who are literally addicted to the thrill that live at the time of purchase, similar to what they experience gamblers. In these people, we find the characteristics of a traditional addiction: craving, abstinence, loss of control and tolerance - having to increase the "dose" to have the same effect.
What are the typical objects?
The four main compulsive expenses concern:
• clothes,
• shoes,
• bags,
• jewelry
• , beauty products.
What advice?
Trying to give some advice not so much and not only for those suffering from a condition already established but for those who want to bring their own way of shopping on a track that he feels control, we can suggest:
No credit cards, especially for those who usually find excuses to circumvent themselves.
No online shopping: this is especially true for people who may have already recognized a predisposition for pathological gambling, the online latencies the compulsive mechanism and addiction-abstinence, from the gesture.
Beware of the owl offers (sales, discounts, discount, etc.)
Establish a budget.
Prevention is better than cure: learn to get excited to avoid emotional purchase.
What therapies?
Since there is no diagnostic clarity even on the therapies, there are not very many data. It is important to underline how individual cases should be evaluated and understood in a "sartorial" way and therefore individualized. On the basis of which are the aspects that most characterize the specific case, (impulsiveness, compulsiveness, social-cultural-person logical aspects, toxicophilia) we will use specific treatments. The most effective findings suggest the Behavioral Cognitive Therapy as the first choice; pharmacological therapies can be useful to better manage certain specific aspects of the clinical picture, such as marked impulsivity, toxicology for the purchase and the tendency to accumulate. Therefore, drug therapy should not be considered as a panacea but as an element to be included in a larger project that must always include family involvement and psychological support. It is also interesting to mention the role that could have innovative techniques, such as mindfulness, both for the management of impulsivity, and related disorders (anxiety, depression), and as a way to find their own well-being upstream of the problem, then on the ability to be happy meditating and learning to become more aware of one's emotions and one's own nature is the main way to make choices that help us to really feel good.
