RE: Find someone to carry you: How we fight depression

in #psychology7 years ago

Firefly is one of the best shows ever made! Excellent quote there.

Depression is a tough thing to deal with. This is true for those who are experiencing it, as well as the loved ones affected. I don't believe depression to be a mental illness by itself. I think it's a step we take while searching for our soul.

There are some institutions that prey on people, however I think the greater problem is that many are entirely misguided in the attempt to "fix" someone with depression.

To me, that advice "get help" means you should reach out to anyone you trust. This can be especially hard since you can feel incredibly vulnerable living in a prolonged state of depression. However, I believe that half of the battle is gathering the courage to admit you aren't happy, and having the faith that someone will care about you enough to feel it too.

There are excellent resources available and I hope that everyone will be willing to give them a try whenever they need it.

I personally found 7cups.com an amazing community and aid when I needed guidance. It is completely free and they also have a mobile app available. There are some great people here, and the daily self help steps and goals are incredibly helpful. I also participated as a listener on the site for a short time.

There is an initiative lead by @rideofpassion starting up right here on steemit that I believe could be a great help to some people who may be living with depression.
