RE: Freethinking, Free Range Children are Dissidents and Scientists

in #psychology9 years ago (edited)

I've always been pretty free-range despite adults trying to exert control over me. Examples -

  • Monthly, to finish Mathematics and English textbooks - always throw them behind the cupboard
  • Must sleep early - always sleep at 4-5am
  • Dad once held me by the neck, telling me to go to sleep - got into a fistfight with him lol
  • Sunday church when I was young - I questioned why do we color angels using light skin tones. And whenever Sunday teacher asked me questions, I will say "why don't you ask God?".

Sometimes I wonder if I'm this way because I'm just going against adults as a motive, or I was just going through the motions. But maybe, being extremely oppressive may cause someone to just go against your grain :)

Haha, Kevin. I love the way you characterized your free range activities. But indeed, I think being extremely oppressive can certainly elicit a counterattack type of response.

Are you familiar with "reactance psychology"? Your thoughts are precisely what the reactance psychologists seem to think.

Checking up on it right now :)
