Such a sad story. But I also have to spare a thought for all those who used/drank (!) water at that hotel during the period Lam was missing.

Yes I can only imagine how they felt it is like a kind of accidental cannibalism.

this is a departure from your usual posts in one sense since it almost verges on investigative reporting, but in an other sense, it's very consistent with your style and your interest in medical/psychological subjects.

You approached the story with compassion and sensitivity and I think your analysis and conclusions are sane and plausible.

One needn't venture further than psychosis as a probable cause for the woman's unfortunate death.

Not to detract from the impact of your other excellent posts, but I liked this one especially because you utilized all your gifts in this article and I look forward to others of the same type.

Excellent work!

Thank you so much you are too kind:)

honestly, Ricardo, everything you do is professional and of excellent quality - I just happened to like this post for the reasons I mentioned and also, I gave some thought to this when I saw the newspaper accounts, but your mentioning the mood disorder and probable psychosis put my questions to rest. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing this and my condolence to the family. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
As you indicated, her health issue might be the cause and should be well adressed when others show such behavior. I only wish that this our dear steemit forum will help send out the message. Thanks for sharing, you earned my upvote and follow.

Yes definitely RIP Elisa and may her family find peace. In many ways it is the ones who are left behind who suffer the most. Thank you for your kind words.

Welcome and lets stay in touch

Great write up man. I saw the video when it was going wild online and heard all the conspiracy theories. At first watch it really does seem to be something strange going on. I never thought it was some sort of supernatural thing but the idea did cross my mind that maybe someone off camera was speaking to her. I never heard about her bi polar though, which adds a whole new dimension to the story and makes a lot of sense in hindsight. Great post!

Thanks mate. Nice to hear from you again:)

It top news previously.. what I think is she talk to a demon.. 👿👹

I don't think so but she may have believed that she was talking to a demon or a ghost or something else.

Yes.. something like that.

I've only been on Steemit a few short says and this was the most interesting piece I read. I'm a very spiritual person and I have experienced and witnessed bizarre phenomena, so at first I felt this was entirely one of those cases. Yes, still weird nonetheless, but the way you laid this out made me consider a multitude of things. You broke this down. Great job! I look forward to more of your posts. This noobie (yours truly) can learn a lot from you.

I always feel for her family when I see some of the nonsense that has surrounded her death.

Yes definitely!

I'm glad I'm not going to bed yet, this gave me the creeps, what ever the real cause for her death was.

Real life is creepy and mental illness - particularly psychosis can be terrifying.

Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️

You're welcome!

This gave me the creeps, what ever the real cause for her death was. :(

So many troubled people are left wondering this planet. Some of them are lucky enough to leave early.

Very true. Not sure if it is lucky or not though. Depends on your situation I suppose!

Yeah, I am kinda grim

Very sad story...Investigation needs ...Just to say this is supernatural not reality...

Thank you!

Welcome....I agree with you about your valuable post...

I recall seeing this on the news or social media. I didn't know all the details as you presented there. That video was disturbing. If she wasn't experiencing anything supernatural and having an psychotic episode I could see her running away and finding a safe place to 'hide'. It is crazy that access to the roof was still so easy after. Spooky post. Not even close to Halloween yet.

Yes and to be honest who knows what she perceived the water tank as - may she didn't even see the water.

yeh. Sound like you have seen these types of psychosis conditions first hand at work but have you ever had any supernatural experiences or believe in it?

Well I don't dismiss them out of hand. I have never had any supernatural experiences but I did suffer hallucinations and delusions when I was very ill with pneumonia (and encephalitis) once. I thought everyone in the hospital was trying to kill me and kept trying to escape.

Oh man, that must have been terrifying. This story got me thinking about a time I stayed in a 'haunted' hotel in Austin. I'm gonna start writing it and post it in a few days. see ya

Yes luckily I remember very little about it beyond little fragments. Cool let me know when you do the post.

Ok. I want you to debunk it. : ) and thanks for the resteem I just saw that. Much appreciated.

The guy I take care of takes bipolar meds, something called Latuda. I don't know if it's from this or all the other psychotropics he's on that cause it or not- but he staggers around falling constantly. He also behaves erratically, doing things he doesn't know he's doing or remember afterward.

Now, obviously I can't speak to what happened to Ms Lam, but I can say without equivocation that those psychotropic drugs cause far more harm than good. That I can attest to first hand... I've seen what they've done to a useful intelligent man.

It depends. In the case of the elderly they can cause problems but they can be a life saver too. It is a case of using them with caution and adjusting dosage if there are side effects. Sometimes people end up on a particular dose and it never gets reviewed.

This guy is under the care of several doctors for depression, bipolar, etc. and they're all prescribing tons of meds (without contacting one another, I believe) plus- he's 65, so the results are predictable! I hope something like that didn't happen to Ms. Lam. If her case is anything like his (and I don't think it is) she could have easily have fallen in without realizing. Great post... I love ones that raise more questions than they answer... makes you think!

That sounds typical. Often elderly people are on so many medications that the interactions become crazy. We used to admit people to hospital sometimes when I was working in Stroke medicine and we sometimes had people on like 20 different meds. The reason was that every specialist was prescribing them something different and nobody was overseeing everything in totality. We often found they improved because we had to stop all their medication in the acute situation.

That's what I wish would happen to him. In 2003 he got Graves Disease and had his thyroid irradiated effectively killing it. He dropped to under 100 lbs. He got depressed about it and the docs started him on antidepressants. When asked how he felt he said OK some days but not others... Oh Oh- you're bipolar... here take some of this!!! If I had my way all of these quacks would be in prison!

That's the thing you have to be very cautious using multiple medications especially in the elderly. Who knows how many people die as a result of the side effects - falls seem to be a very common issue in elderly people and polypharmacy is one of the causes.

How well I know, my friend! I barely sleep, listening for cries for help from downstairs. Then I have to pick him up, get him back into bed (then usually mop up pee where goes on the floor). I keep wondering if he wouldn't be better off in a home... except that I know he wouldn't. He has periods of lucidity and near functionality... he would be miserable put away, especially during those times which he would find unbearable.

Thanks for such an in depth post on this tragic story. I had caught it initially at the time but didn't know many of the details.

So sad that no one was able to notice her pain and be there for her.

Sometimes all it takes is one of us to smile, say hi, need help, whatever to make a difference. We need to consider everyone as a neighbor and act as one. Make a difference today!

Yes agreed. In her case it may have been a sudden change. There is no way to be sure though because she was travelling alone. Her parents spoke to her everyday but people with mental illness can sometimes mask how they are.

Now that's one bizarre story!!! The thought of drinking that water, eeeewww!!!!

Yes people were drinking it for weeks. It is horrible.

This is so sad:( breaks my heart seeing that smile on her face in the first picture

oh man saw this on buzzfeed unsolved and top5s. so weird

Weird but not supernatural.

Nice :)

Thanks - I think it is not the best description given the subject though!

Quite the conclusion you have there mate. I'm a sucker for these kind of stuff. What do you think of "Lam Elisa" TB test which seems to be connected to this cas somehow?

Coincidences happen. To be honest the connection is incredibly tenuous at best. I'm sure you if you looked at a lot of cases hard enough you would find coincidences.

I love this story. They try to make it seem like some murder mystery on some tv shows and youtube videos but I agree.. Had to be some type of mental issue. Just in her behavior. People have done odder things.

Yes definitely. It is sad but this kind of sensationalising ignores the actual issue which could be handled better.

When we're talking of people on psychiatric medication I think there's no need to look for supernatural explanations. Could be the mental illness or some side-effects of the medication she was on. This is the first thing that came to mind as just a bit earlier I read an article about the side-effects of some antipsychotics prescribed to children.
Yet, as someone that used to be a journalist, I know that the media will try to sell this sad story as something unexplained and supernatural.

Yes sadly supernatural sells better. Also they would want to play down any side effects of medication as it might not play well with certain advertisers.

I've heard of this disappearance before.
Really bewildering as her case is truly uncanny and mystifying.
Will we ever know what happened?
RIP Elisa

Whilst the exact events will never be known I think it is pretty likely this was a mental health issue.

Interesting, never heard of the case.
People like sensations. They also dislike thinking about mental illness, because it is so... intangible? non-grappable? You cant hide from it behind a filter, cut it away or treat it without seriously messing with yourself.
Two good reasons for it to turn into what it did.

While I agree with most of your conclusion, I have one big disagreement with something you implied. (Maybe you didnt and I misinterpret, which makes the whole argument mute. Sorry for waisting time in that case.) I am also going off-topic here.

While the health/safety issue with not protecting the watersupply is very problamatic, I do not agree with the assumption that the tanks should have to be drownproofed somehow. I am sorry for the poor girls death and her families suffering, but businesses do not exist to prevent people from doing bad/harmful/stupid things.

Favorite example (really off-topic now, no comparison):
If you burn your hand on the hot coffee you just ordered, your an idiot. I you blame the cafe and sue them for not warning you that the hot coffee is indeed hot, your a idiot³. Dont even get me started on the judge that rules you to be right...

Thanks!

It's a tricky issue and I can see your point of view too. I think you can't deathproof the whole world and you can't prevent accidents 100%.

Also this is a very freak sort of incident.

What worries me more is the fact that people could (if they had bad intentions) interfere with (e.g. poison) the water which I don't think is excusable.

What worries me more is the fact that people could (if they had bad intentions) interfere with (e.g. poison) the water which I don't think is excusable.

Yeah, that's quite crazy. Sure, if someone wanted to poison the water, they could always drill a hole, but at least make them work that much... They didnt even have the hatches closed.

That's the thing there could have been bird droppings and all kinds of crap (literally) in there!

There probably are. Well, that's one hotel I'll never be drinking water at ;D

Lol! Bring your own water if you have to stay there!

Wow, you really have moved the bar on creating good content @thecryptofiend. I personally had never heard of Elisa Lam or the bizarre way in which she died, but you had me hooked and I had to find out more. I have spent another 40 mins on YouTube researching more.

While there clearly is nothing supernatural surrounding her death, it clearly shows the devastating effects mental health issues can have on people. While we can only speculate to what had happened, the poor girl obviously needed help and unfortunately, still in this day and age, there is never enough help and support for those that suffer from these severe conditions.

You certainly have my creative juices flowing now, so will be researching some topics that pique my interest.

Thanks buddy!

Thank you for your kind words - one thing I forgot to mention is that she was also around the peak age when people start to develop schizophrenia.

So maybe we were looking at untreated early stages of schizophrenia? Poor girl. Such sad circumstances. How do we as a society not learn from these happenings?

Cheers!

Well it can sometimes be hard to spot - sometimes the first episode seems to come out of the blue but right now it is just speculation because there is no way to find out.

Too true!

Many thanks for the resteem! I feel loved!

You should pop in to PALnet on Discord sometime, we are in the process of setting up a Steem Team GB!

thanks for sharing master. no wonder people get psychotic. look at whats happening in the world.store-3b.jpg

Octopus-3.jpg

True. The world is becoming more and more distressing.

Psychosis is also the term the use when describing someone who is interacting with someone who is there, but others can't see.

If many people experience the same thing, but not a majority of the people... it is just chalked up to psychosis.

I wonder what it was like when people started seeing color.
I wonder what it will be like as more people start experiencing more colors.

That is one point of view. Not mine though!

good post
my friend

Great read! Sad story, but a well put together article for sure.

This was an interesting story. I agree with your assessment. Occam's razor would seem to apply in this instance.

A very sad read, I agree with you whe you say she looks like she is having a episode. She should have had a travel partner . Very sad

Yes definitely.

wow
