Berthold Auerbach was a German writer. His real name was Moyses Baruch.
He comes from an impoverished but large Jewish family.
With his "Schwarzwälder Dorfgeschichten" he achieved his breakthrough in 1843. In these he described "an entire village from the first to the last house".
This work influenced authors such as Honore de Balzac, Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev, and Leo Tolstoy. He maintained personal contact with the latter.
Auerbach worked as a freelance writer in Weimar, Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin, Breslau and Vienna.
