How to Remove Flies from a Room with a Flashlight

in #qwoa8 years ago (edited)

I just figured out this trick last night, and I thought I'd share it, see if it helps others. Ever have some flies in a room, tent, etc., especially if you're trying to sleep, and they're just driving you crazy? Well if you have a flashlight (I used the camera light on my phone) and a couple minutes, and can darken the room, here's a way to get rid of them.

Darken the room, then shine the light slowly about the room. Flies of various types will tend to be attracted to the beam of light. Turn the light slowly down to point to the floor or other flat surface so the surface is brightly lit under your light. Hold the light a foot or two above the surface. The flies will follow the beam of light, and as they begin hitting the ground, they'll stop and crawl on it.

At this point, as long as the light is shining directly on their eyes, the flies seem to be blinded, so you can just calmly pick them up and either crush them or move them elsewhere. Just try not to get your shadow on them before picking them up, but this is pretty easy if you hold the light in one hand, and pick up bugs with the other.

This method takes a little time, as you have to deal with each fly individually, but if you just want to remove the flies from a room and aren't worried about more finding a way in, this should do the trick.

I've only tried this once, but I got lots of flies of different kinds this way. Let me know if it works for you too! :-)

This post is in the #qwoa tag, which stands for Quick Word of Advice. I think it would be cool if, in the random lessons and mistakes we all make while living our lives, we made quick little posts like this about things we think others might find valuable. I will try to remember to do this going forward, and I'd love to see others post their tips as well :-D

@modprobe That make sense. Why i did not think of that before? Lol

Yeah it does work, I had tried similar tricks in a past... 😃

Sweet! I was shocked at how easy it was. At first I tried to swat them, but they would feel the moving air and fly away. It's easiest just to reach out and pick them up; they won't try to get away.

That's the part I find so interesting, that they are so docile when a small bit of moving air startles them to move.

Wow, this is new! A nice experiment to perform when lights are out!!!

that's worth a vote ! what an excellent life hack / tip.. I am going to try this and I'm always up for a humane way to deal with any pests !

If you're looking to do it without killing them, you might have to be super gentle with your fingers. Alternatively you could trap them under a cup and slide a piece of paper underneath or something.

nice post :)

Nothing beats the satisfying crack of the bug zapper... But another fun bug dispensing item is a vacuum cleaner - by the time they feel it coming, it's too late. :D

Haha, let's try this tonight. Did you test it one time..? Maybe it is better then my method.. walking around in the room again and again till I have the last one... and 3 hours laters I go to sleep.. And tired in the morning..

Haha, well I tried it before posting, and it worked great then. Did it work for you?

No didn't test it yet.. there was nothing to test in my room. 4 sure i will let you know the result of my test. Maybe this will be the method in the future. I can see already companies making devices who do this for you. lol Maybe aliexpress is scouting these posts and you can buy it online from tomorrow.. ;-)

definitely a very clever trick, wish it worked with mosquitoes too! lol

Yeah, I haven't tried it with mosquitoes. I'm not sure if they respond to light the same way.

Wow, a very cute post, I loved it! Flies circle around my phone's screen when I'm Steemiting in the dark! I'll shine it on the floor in future and catch them in a glass! Thanks @modprobe!

Awesomee photo..!! hahaha good tecnique
