A few years ago I read a study that showed that British Muslim and South Asian adolescents who attended schools which were populated almost solely by those of the same race and religion as them had generally favorable views towards white non Muslims, whereas white non Muslim children who attended generally homogenous all white schools had a generally negative view of south Asians and Muslims. The study continued to contrast these conceptions with the conceptions of students at schools of a more diverse nature. The results of the study were fascinating. They showed that Muslim and South Asian children who attended less homogenous schools, and thus interacted significantly more with the ethnic majority, had a significantly less favorable view of white people than those who had hardly mixed with them, whereas white non Muslims who had mixed and interacted with south Asian Muslims had a significantly more favorable perception of Muslim South Asians than those who had had little to no contact with them.
I feel similar to the South Asian Muslims at a diverse school, but rather than the dynamic being racial, or religious, it is more to do with class, geography, and substantive culture. At school, I was surrounded by Tories, the vast majority of my year group were conservatives, and indeed, my far left tendencies made me stick out like a sore thumb. Then, after a brief spell at university, I was forced to return to the North due to illness, and spent almost two years in the company of apolitical Leeds students. I had forgotten my years in the Green Party, surrounded by middle class socially liberal leftists by this point, and returned to university as socially liberal and economically left wing as ever. After a year at a top university in the south, I can safely say that I understand how Islamic extremists are made. Having spent a year amongst the southern posh middle class left wing toe-rags, and in the knowledge that I will have to spend the next two years surrounded by such pompous fools, I too am partial to the destruction of The West. I believe that this understanding shall prove useful to the Government’s Prevent strategy.
