I am a pensioner, so although I am not directly threatened by robots and, as a science fiction fan, am an enthusiast, loving the idea of them, I still hold as prime truth that always human beings must come first.
It is troubling and, as usual, when the answers are complex, mankind will swing from one end of the pendulum to the other, and I dread to think of what will happen at either extremes. We must mature, but whether we do or not depends also on what the robots will be like.
Imagine you are in a building that catches fire. As the firemen are about to enter the building, you wave to them and they see you on the fourth floor. Once inside, because of the extreme heat, they decide it is a waste to make the effort, just in the unlikely event someone is still alive.
Out of the four of them, one is a human, the rest are robots. The robots are not afraid, it is just that they have been programmed to keep in mind that they cost a lot of energy to manufacture, so they must only risk themselves when they are certain they can save a human life.
Luckily for you, the human firefighter does not believe in logic. To him, if someone is in danger, it is his duty to get them out, so he makes his way to you and the two of you share a beer at a pub the next day.
Some would thank him for saving them. I would thank him for being a human, and not a robot.
well said, it has got to be said that robot have to be programed by humans, they don't see logic and in a sence have no compasion, this been said its all down to data, if that person on the top floor has only 1% chance of making it out a human would attempt to go after that said person. a robot might sence that with been that small of a risk could let the person burn.
