Many of us have been abused in several aspects of our life, but today's focus is on RAPE! yeah, I don't like talking about it either, but if we don't say anything and expose this act of wickedness, it'll continue to spread, until it becomes the new normal in our societies and countries.
The subjugation and oppression of women has been present overtime in Nigeria and across different countries. There are reasons that have been highlighted in the past regarding this situation, one of which is inequality in gender relations between women and men. Men cannot be raped, but they can be abused.
Personally, I think over time we've gradually evolved from that primitive mindset to a modern pattern of life. Now the act of Rape is a CHOICE. This act being a choice leaves us with the question; who is to blame, the male or the female, did she put herself in that position to be raped, or the man's indiscipline to self control?.
In recent times, Nigeria has reported an increased number of rape. When this issue is been discussed on radio, you begin to hear callers calling in to blame the victim especially when it's a female.
Rape culture
This is a situation where the victim is blamed and judged as being responsible for his/her misfortune. Usually you'll start hearing statements like "She gave me her consent", "they asked for it", "they enjoyed it", these beliefs are propagated to reinforce blame on the victim.
As a result of this situation, survivors have been alienated, thereby causing trauma and fear in their hearts, making it difficult for them to share their side of the story or even report to law enforcement agencies in their region for fear of being held responsible.
We'll be talking about how to address this issue of rape culture. Rape culture exist because we neglect its consequences on the victim and the society.
