in #readinglog7 years ago

I'm trying a new semi-weekly project where I keep track of any posts on the Steem blockchain which I've found worth reading. Here's the stuff I've enjoyed reading over the last few days.

How to create beautiful framed comic books for just over $1 each!

by @retro-room

Grab whatever comic books you want to frame, your narrow artwork frames from Dollar Tree, the paper for the matte and a pair of scissors. I decided to frame my Dragon's Lair and Space Ace comics to display them in my game room. Make sure you grab the frames that are vertically oriented and not…

Enzyme based Nanocomposites: An alternative to the effective killing of Pathogenic Bacteria

by @vinamra

Today, I’ll be sharing a whole new approach to kill or inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. From centuries we have been suffering from several microbial infections and researchers are trying really hard to find a way to inhibit the pathogenic bacteria. All the antibiotics we prepare to…

What exactly is an orbit? An Introduction

by @proteus-h

Much of the technology you use everyday depends on the fact that satellites can be put into stable orbits. When someone drives to work, the navigation system routing them around traffic is using GPS satellites to pinpoint the user's locations. Digital maps themselves rely on pictures taken by…

What is an orbit? Part 2: Common types of orbits

by @proteus-h

Today I'd like to briefly discuss various common types of orbital trajectories that many satellites above your head use to complete their missions. Since a given orbit defines the location and velocity of a satellite at any given time, different orbits are used by different spacecraft to accomplish…

Fun with Markov chains: Generating synthetic text!

by @dexterdev

In #steemstem community we value originality and quality for the science articles very much. But many times we confront with plagiarized posts. Which are neither original nor having any quality. I am going to give a shortcut to those guys a magic solution which will solve one of the issues. The…

Bizarre Natural Phenomena Vol. 53 - When The Clouds Spin Above The Seas (Waterspouts)

by @ruth-girl

For today I'd like you to follow me on an imaginary fishing trip. We are on a boat, sea is calm, some clouds above our heads just to protect us from the bright sunlight so we don't need a hat and some cold beers next to our chairs as we wait for those fishing nets to get filled with poor little…

The "column chromatography" for biologists -- 生物學家的管柱層析法

by @mcw

To prepare protein, the most convenient way is to "ask" a cell to make it for us. As bacteria have a high reproduction rate, the easiest and fastest way is to prepare protein is to grow bacteria!!! However, bacteria aside from producing the protein which I am looking for, it also produce alot of…

A Jekyll & Hyde Crystal cluster

by @roswellrockman

Occasionally I encounter a crystal cluster with two faces. Such is the case with this cluster.

Rarely do you find a specimen with two different crystal structures on opposite sides of the same rock. Here we have calcite on one side and quartz on the other.

Side one is loaded with Dog Tooth…

Quantification and Characterization of a Bacterial Community in Sediments from Mammoth Cave

by @qiyi

Molecular surveys of bacteria in Mammoth Cave National Park were carried out from 2001-2006. Our ultimate goal was to characterize cave microbial communities and monitor the cave for any problems such as fecal or chemical contamination in the world’s most extensive karst groundwater system.…

How to: Off-Grid House - Water and Sewage

by @alexdory

Living in an off-the-grid house doesn't mean that you have to compromise on comfort.
When I first thought about buying a house (remember, I was 20 at the time), I had the preconception of having to live like I saw in the rural areas of the country, with a well and toilet outside of the house. I…

The newly announced Earth BioGenome Project is aiming to sequence, catalog, and characterize the DNA of all living eukaryotes on Earth!

by @valth

I just love it when a few people want to change the world, and this is exactly what could happen if the newly announced “Earth BioGenome Project” (EBP) is successful. This extremely ambitious project wants to sequence, catalog, and characterize the entire genome of all known eukaryotic species on…

ADSactly Art History - The Further Development of Hellenistic Art: Architecture, Urban Planning, Philosophy and Religion

by @adsactly

New cities are arranged according to a rectangular plan - just like the fifth-century Piraeus. Examples are Priene and Pergamum - Hellenistic cities. Streets were designed wider, with care for sanitary installations and water availability. Agora is surrounded by porticoes for comfort and shade.…

My Greenhouse Dream Came True - Timberframe Style

by @qberryfarms

My love for plants came from my Momma. Growing up Momma always had houseplants and we had a veggie garden that we all worked in. We had some flowers in front of the house, but Momma swore she couldn't have anything for us. It either got mowed down, run over by the cars or chewed up by the dog. I…

Off-Grid: Rebuilding the Rocket Stove Boiler and Connecting Outdoor Plumbing for Spring Showers

by @jackdub

Last week was snow - this week feels like spring. Yesterday was a good day to rebuild the Outdoor Rocket Stove Boiler. We collect and boil rain water for cleaning dishes, cleaning clothes, and bathing. I've had this larger 68 quart Stainless Steel stock pot on hand for many months - looking forward…

How Blockchains Could Fix Science

by @simoxenham

I began this series by saying: I have a dream for science on Steem. If you haven’t already guessed by now, my dream is for a decentralised, blockchain-based, scientific journal run democratically by scientists for scientists with the profits going back into science. It would have no paywall and…

New Climate Projects Coming to World Community Grid

EOS

So You Want to Learn About EOS...

by @lukestokes

A couple of investor friends have asked me about where to start in order to "read everything" related to EOS. That's a tricky thing, since the whole space moves so fast, and I've been working hard to consume it all in real time for many months now. I figured the least I can do for them is talk…

Steem Basic Income - Frequently Asked Questions

by @steembasicincome

The official currency for enrollment is STEEM (STEEM Basic Income).

[UBI & SBI] My thoughts on the Universal Basicincome & Steembasicincome + Giveaway SBI shares!

by @anouk.nox

I am a true believer in the Universal Basic Income (from now on I will say UBI) idea, since I first read about this idea. At that time a Dutch person was giving away one basic income for a year whenever he would have completely funded it via crowdfunding. I joined, but didn't win it. After my first…

So, what's all this then?

My goals here are to foster interaction on steem and provide visibility for good content.

Why not just resteem

This is basically a UI issue; I've noted in my feed that some great accounts which resteem dozens of times a day tend to drown out other posts. Until there's a way to separate author-content from resteems in there general steem-verse (i.e. on Steemit), I don't like resteeming much.

Criteria and format

The only real criterion I have is that the article should be something I was happy to have read. Ideally, it would be recent enough to still be active for 3 to 4 days after I post. A few other other things:

  • There's no restriction on category, though I tend to read more STEM/nerdy stuff
  • The list is not exhaustive
  • If I left you off, it's not because I don't think your post was worth reading
  • I'm still figuring out how to arrange topics
  • Post order is like the point system on 'Whose Line Is It Anyway' - meaningless
  • If you're a prolific author, I might only list one post in full format, then mention others.
  • If I post your stuff a lot, I may leave you out from time to time to make room for others.
  • If time allows, I may provide commentary on posts, but right now I'm letting them stand on their own merits.
  • Artists! I'm trying to post your art in such a way that people can see enough of it to know if they want to follow the link. I definitely don't want to just repost your stuff in full resolution. Let me know what makes you happy.

Call to Action

I enjoyed compiling this list and you can do it, too. Even if your vote counts for nothing and you have 3 whole followers, start keeping track of what you actually liked reading and let the world know about it. I don't think there's a relevant tag yet, so let's go ahead and use #readinglog. If there is a better tag out there, let me know.

Remember, a community without interactions is just a bunch of people. Comment, vote, promote, even resteem!

Thank you for mentioning my post! I will resteem this post.. I am quite busy with other weekly projects, but if I find some spare time to make a post using your tag, I will..
Thanks for sharing..

You're welcome. I'm working on a tool that will help people make posts like this, but it's not ready for primetime yet.

Thank you so much for the mention and I am so happy you enjoyed reading about my greenhouse. WOW! This is quite the list of awesome Reads. I sure appreciate you having them all in one place. Looks like I have found me some Sunday Reading. Thanks so much for the support!

I think reading is truly one of the few things many people do today especially on the Steem platform. For support of you initiative and call to ask people to read more, log there readings and share that reading under the reading log tag I am sharing your post and spotlighting it on tonight's #communitygrowthproject. Lets give the community actions and continue to encourage reading, writing, and applying basic creative concepts Steem on my friend.

Oh wow, super cool! Salute to you too, I was unaware of the #communitygrowthrproject and it seems we have a lot of views in common. I'm glad you found me and that my little initiative is getting out there. Thanks especially for highlighting the call to action.

Omg. I love how you just made it easy for me to find the good stuff.

Now time to read 😍
Thank you for this
