Random reblog idea

in #reblog9 days ago

I snapped about it but not sure if people understood what I meant, so thought I'd do a quick post which may reach more people.

Making reblogs "worth" something has been difficult for a long time, even many who use them well may not get any feedback that it's because of their reblogs a post receive more curation or got more engagement, etc.

Front-ends however could easily determine how a user got to find out about the post, let's take a look at @peakd in this example here on my feed. This post by @solumviz is something I'm interested in, now ignore the fact it's posted in the @holozing community which means I would've probably found it sooner or later anyway - let's assume that without the reblog by @bananzell I may have missed it. This means that this reblog was well timed and got at least one other curator to check it out.

Now imagine if @peakd (and other front-ends sharing this info with each other) would place rebloggers in a certain color-range, in my example I made @bananzell's username green when viewed from the feed, and this would continue on and stay the same color when viewed inside the post as well, even from the author itself.

Now imagine if the color-code also continued towards the voting list:

The idea is basically to show others that a post received additional votes and potentially even comments through the reblog. The front-ends could potentially track if a post was opened through the original author or through the reblog of another user.

I've been thinking if and how this could be abused, but since there's no rewards to be had I doubt people would attempt to abuse it. I don't know how it would handle if a post has been reblogged by more than one account you happen to follow, maybe it'd just pick the first one that did so. People attempting to reblog too much would naturally get unfollowed if it's becoming spammy.

The idea is simply for the author to notice that a post received more curation and engagement thanks to a reblog one of their followers did. It's meant to build different kind of connections between accounts and empower reblogs with a feedback system that let's both the author and reblogger know that their reblog had an impact.

Anyway, maybe this idea could be implemented in a different way, I'm all ears, just thought I'd throw it out there and see what ya'll think about it to begin with. Let me know!

Sort:

Not just for reblogs, @acidyo. This should be for votes too. A different color code or marker for votes that were cast after the post was viewed so we know which user at least opened the post and that vote wasn't an auto vote or trail vote.

Yeah, I like the idea of knowing which votes are manual.

I loved how you broke it down with examples.
Adding that color-coded system would give reblogs more value and encourage organic engagement, and this visibility for rebloggers could make a big difference.

I don't know if it'd be possible, but do you think there is a way for the rebloggers to get rewards (in any form) for reblogging the content? Maybe like auto-recommending the author in his/her next post to add some beneficiaries to the reblogged post for whom the author got curated last time. Maybe sounds a bit complex, but it's just an idea.

I wrote a post some time ago about some potential reblog rewards but not sure if it'd get spammed up and kind of ruin this idea if we'd incentivize them with rewards.

I've had similar thoughts to this as well.
Frontends have a lot of information they aren't using for anything.

That sounds like a great idea. Always wondered since I joined here that the reblogs are doing it's thing or not. Implementing this feature will definitely show some proof of exposure and content consumption. Since it's not reward based I doubt people will take advantage of this feature which is nice.

😅😅😅 I'm surprised to be mentioned but given your train of thought. i think the idea of being able to engage a reblog (like add a caption) might be nice. kind of like retweets in a sense? engagement from reblogs appeal to me in a way that it could promote discussion. and that's clear impact there. and people do tend to check blogs more if another person can say something good or unique about the blog

i think the idea of being able to engage a reblog (like add a caption) might be nice.

Yeah this has been brought up in the past as well, these may have to be "front-end only" addition however. Leaving comments could be a good solution for now saying something like "reblogging for visibility" or "reblogging cause I care about this" or "I don't really agree with this but reblogging for the discussion".

seems like a good alternative for the caption idea. Then I guess you'll just have to mention specific people you'd want to discuss the blog topic with 🤔 not that different from if you mention someone in a caption when you reblog something too

Yeah, but it could also show that your reblog wasn't "nothing" in many ways.

Having followers with a lot of stake should be valuable, I know for instance @blocktrades follows me and many authors would be thrilled to receive a vote from that account. Now if I can reblog something that he finds so interesting and worthy of a big vote, that'd be valuable both to me the one doing reblogs right, the author and hive as a whole because rewards went to worthy content.

Now he may still vote a post I reblogged, but if I never find out if he voted it due to my reblog or if he just happened to see it in the hot/trending list or other reasons, that doesn't let me know if I was on the right track of using reblogs properly. There is no feedback so to speak unless I straight up went and asked him if he found this post through me which would be a bit unnecessary.

There may also be many users who never reblog because they may think it doesn't do anything since they never see the feedback and effects in action.

That's kind of the idea behind it, it could also offer a different kind of feedback loop that maybe you're reblogging someone too often and your followers aren't interested in curating that account - but I think the other point is way more important to empower.

ohh you want traceability in a sense that you'd like to see how far the engagement reaches and the trends for the things you reblog, is that it? because if it's trend tracing. that's gonna be a toughie but if it's for how big your reblog can contribute to an author. that color system does fit the bill. gonna be a lot of coding to show contribution level though and a lot of entanglements on if you're upvoted a mutual follow and on who gets credit there

You were mentioned for a good course😁

It would be nice, that's a great idea. Other frontends, as @ecency, could take that idea and implement it too.

I think there are some people who use it way too much and then it ends up flooding your feed. Then those people who do it excessively end up getting muted or something like that. Maybe not all the time, but I have seen it happen. I have also had it happen to me.

I have said it multiple times already, but no one noticed.

There should be a way to mute/ignore just reblogs from a specific user without muting or unfollowing them.

I have seen people unfollow others just because someone was reblogging a lot of accounts that the other guy wasn't interested in. I know there is a filter to exclude reblogs but that filter just excludes every reblog rather than just those that we want to exclude.

Yeah, that would be cool.

It's a very interesting idea, I think it would be very nice if it were implemented.

I think a great way to tie in rewards is alert the person on payouts what % each reblog contributed to the payout. That way the author has information they can choose to act on and send tips or w/e to the reblogger. At least I think that would be possible with the reblog info added to the chain in vote data under memo maybe.

I have a recent post talking about a reblog rewarder idea that may have touched on some things you mention here if you wanna check it out.

The biggest issue is always how to prevent abuse, spam or other incentives that go against the main idea of reblogs cause there's rewards involved. I think this idea wouldn't really bring out the bad things.

Yeah I have also seen the views are less than votes. Just voting is not the main idea well I know its there account and their freedom and right to vote anyone but we must vote after reading the blog, this way the community gets better as newcomers with good content will get some benefits. Well I really liked this one bringing the real issues.

Reblogs are really a great way to great engagement. I no so many great posts I would have missed. It thanks to a reblog and most times from a different person entirely..great idea

Basically you want something like crosspost tracking where there are comments and upvotes on the crossed post... Not a bad idea, sometimes I wondered if my posts reblogged led to anything at all and it wouldn't be exploitable

@bananzell bananinha the best reblogger! 🤣

I think it's an excellent idea. It would motivate those who publish to foster community with others.
For my part, I reblog posts that interest me and that I think might be of interest to others. I don't do it expecting any rewards, but if what you mention worked, it would be nice to know that thanks to my efforts someone was able to gain more reach.

Cross-posting in PeakD communitoes at least creates a new thread with its own comments, but all voting rewards are sent to the original. Would reblogging need a similar mechanism to work as you envision?

I've never thought of reblogs that way, i basically reblog a post because i find it intriguing and its something i would like to go back to when scrolling down my blog, but then again i can just bookmark it right. but what if there is like a notification that pops up when ever a follower or others vote the post you rebloged just like in the case of bookmark,?

That's a great idea. That way we can see if the reblogs are working. I know there are people on this platform who don't like you. There are people who don't like all of us. But they should see that you are one of the few people who are still thinking and coming up with ideas for this platform.
