How To Make A Homemade Frappuccino-Style Protein Shake

in #recipe7 years ago

This is my breakfast every day, and the reason why I'm not a hypoglycemic roller coaster anymore (I used to be. Hangry ain't got nothin' on hypoglycemic). It is also super tasty.

Step One:
Add a big blob of plain yogurt to your blender cup. Go for ones without added sugars ...you'll be adding plenty enough of that on your own. Vanilla, chocolate, or coffee flavor yogurts also work - but I wouldn't recommend anything fruity. We're going for a chocolate-coffee drink here. Sometimes I add twice the size of this blob. It depends on if I want more tangy flavor (and more probiotics) or less.

Step two:
Add a serving of coffee, ~1 cup of americano. I cold brew mine in a French press, so I made that yesterday for today's shake.

Step three:
Add a heaping scoop of whey protein powder (do you love my precise measurements? I'm not sure how big my scoops are. Maybe two tablespoons? So, two heaping tablespoons?).

Step four:
Add two heaping teaspoons of cocoa powder (hey, I know the measurement this time because that's just what I have been using as my scoop ...lol).

Step five:
Add ~1 1/2 scoops (so, maybe ~3 tablespoons) of sugar* (this will vary, see notes at the end).

Step six:
Add ~five ice cubes if you freeze it in trays like me. Probably a cup or so if you have an ice machine in your fridge, because those cubes are less dense.

Step seven:
Add some raw, local, wildflower honey** (it's good for allergies!).

Step eight:
Blend.

Step nine:
Add whipped cream if you have it, and you like it (nom).

Enjoy!

Variations:
*sugar amounts will vary based not only on your tastes, but also what kind of sugar (you can see I am using up some fine grain white sugar here, but normally [seen behind my blender cup], I have turbinado sugar, which is a larger grain). If you use a larger grain you will scoop a little more to get the same amount of sweet because more of the scoop is space between grains (think marbles in a jar versus golf balls). It will also depend on your other ingredients:
**if you add more honey, you can use less sugar. Less honey or no honey, more sugar. I don't measure the honey with a spoon; I draw a few patterns with it and that's a "serving" to me, unless I am getting it out of a jar, in which case I just take a big spoonful. Also, if you used sugared yogurt, use less sugar.
-you can also make some homemade chocolate syrup and replace the sugar and cocoa with it.
-you can add chocolate chips if you like.
-you can add ~1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract if you like.
-you can omit the yogurt if you like, but it will make the shake a bit less thick AND you should also cut back on sugar without it.
-you can add a shot of espresso if you like (it's very good that way).
