Store bought brown sugar is easy to grab off the shelf. When stored in an airtight container, it can last a long time. But, what if you forget to grab another package and you are in the middle of making your favorite baked goods? We got your back! Let's learn how to make brown sugar at home.

What is brown sugar, really?

Brown sugar is basically the raw sugar with the molasses still in it. It's less refined than regular sugar, typically. It's also produced on a commercial level by combining the 2 ingredients back together. However, you can easily make it at home with your own granulated sugar and molasses. The basic recipe is a cup of sugar to a Tablespoon of molasses.

Why You’ll Love the Homemade Brown Sugar

  1. Food storage friendly-you only need to store cane sugar and molasses.
  2. Customize-able- You can make the sugar light or dark by adjusting the amount of molasses. Need dark brown sugar? Add more molasses. This recipe is more equivalent to light brown sugar.

Do I need special equipment to make brown sugar?

I prefer to use a stand mixer for making homemade brown sugar. You can also use a food processor to blend the white sugar and molasses. If you really want to, you can simply use a wooden spoon and large bowl to mix this up. That works well, but just takes a bit longer to mix.

Storing Homemade Brown Sugar

Store your homemade brown sugar for up to 6 months in an airtight container. If it starts to get rock hard, simply add a piece of bread in the container.

You can also use a terra cotta piece for storing your brown sugar longer term. You'll soak it in water for several hours, and it keeps your brown sugar soft and moist.
