“Two myths currently limit our collective imagination: the myth that advertising is the only possible business model for online companies, and the myth that it’s too late to change the way platforms operate. On both points, we need to be a little more creative.”
Tim Berners-Lee, Founder of the World Wide Web. ( W.W.W. 29th birthday letter )
We strived to be creative; we wanted to revolutionize the current online business model; and we did.
Today, online companies make the majority of their profit through advertising, using strategies such as monthly fees or transaction fees. Advertising is omnipresent on every mainstream website or app, just think of major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, Twitter etc.
This is due to the fact that the websites we visit the most tend to be the most popular, and popularity is advertising's best friend.
It comes without saying that, if you are the owner of a website with millions of users every day, you should overload it with ads. It is the easiest method to make a profit, just choose where to place advertising banners in the UI and start counting the numbers.
However, this detracts from user experience. We’re tired of being constantly overloaded by advertising campaigns that exacerbate an already consumeristic online experience.
Since January we've been working on how to remove ads while also rewarding our users for their contributions on the platform. We believe users to be central to social platforms, so it comes naturally that they should be rewarded financially.
Platforms such as Facebook, which in 2017 had a turnover of $ 40.65 billion, failed to reward their users in any meaningful way. While this may seem like a sound strategy in terms of revenue, we believe that in order to generate quality content one must incentivize and reward the users
We stand behind the idea of users being the "lymph " of their ecosystem and that they should be proportionately rewarded for their contributions.
However, not all users contribute to a healthy platform. So, who should decide which content is valuable and which is not?
Under our system, users will be incentivized to use their judgment to support valuable content or discredit fake and offensive content. We plan on rewarding users as curators, so that they will aim to create a trustworthy platform, similarly to Steemit.
We decided to build our project on the EOSio blockchain because it allows us to execute our concept without any transaction fees. Compared to other blockchains such as Ethereum, Stellar, Tron, NEO, and many others, EOSio handles up to millions of transactions per second, these numbers are exceptional compared to the 25 per second of ETH or the 1200 per second of TRON. Because of that, we decided to adopt this technology to create our App Decentralized.
Recommaend
Our project is called Recommaend and it's a decentralized recommendation platform.
We think that recommendations are one of the most accredited forms of advice . Studies show that 84 percent of people trust online reviews as much as a friend’s advice. Furthermore, it goes without saying that, if we recommend a hotel or a restaurant to a friend, that business will gain a profit as a result. Our goal is to reward users for such contributions.
Our system would allow recommendations on almost anything, ranging from a restaurant you've known for a long time, the last film you've seen on Netflix or the last Airbnb house you've been to. Also, users who create reviews that are found to be particularly useful would then be proportionately rewarded.
Of course users may also decide not to recommend a business and, if it is considered a reliable opinion by the community, they will still be rewarded for it. Businesses should be able to improve their service based on these reviews and, above all, users will be aware of any problems.
While we will not go into excessive detail on the process, this is the link to our website https://recommaend.com with more information for whoever might be interested. You can also register for the Beta trial that will be released shortly.
