Song of the day - Sonata for violin and piano by Haro Stepanian (1897 - 1966)

in #recordpool7 years ago (edited)

"Today" - April 25, 1897 was born in the ancient city of Yelizabetpol, today Ganja in Azerbaijan, Haro Stepanian (1897 - 1966).

Stepanian had his musical training in Russia, at Gnessin Music College between 1923 and 1926 in Moscow, and at the State Conservatory in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) where he studied composition with Vladimir Shcherbachov (1887 - 1952).

Like his professional life, his work is heavily influenced by the music of Armenia, in which he made several expeditions to collect musical samples throughout the country. In his works we can see the influence of the work of Komitas Vardapet (1869 - 1935), Armen Tigranian (1879 - 1950), the poetics of Frédéric Chopin (1810 - 1849) and Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943).

He was named artist of the Armenian people in 1960, and Aram Khachaturian (1903 - 1978), one of the greats composers and directors of the century XX, described him in 1953 as the greatest Soviet Armenian composer.

"I fell in love with Armenian folk music ... as a person loves a mother, a friend or a loved one. I heard the voice of the heart and soul of my home country, the echoes of the historical storms, joys, hopes, rage, and dreams of my people. Throughout my life I looked upon it as if it were a living being"

His sonata for violin and piano clearly reveals his influences and exacerbates originality, here in an interpretation of Arman Mkhitarian at the piano, and Ara G. Bogdanyan at the violin!

"Eu me apaixonei pela música folclórica armênia...
