Song Of The Day: Old Soul Track With Modern Rework - "Didn't I" by Darando (Rework by Dave Allison)

in #recordpool7 years ago

A breezy interpretation of an already breezed out track crafted in 1973 by the late soul singer from the Bay Area, Darando. BBC Radio 1's Gilles Peterson began throwing the old classic in his sets around 2007 which gave the track new life. Below is the original for your listening pleasure.

Darando - Didn't I

Dave Allison gives the BPM a little juice in his rework and pulls back Darando's vocals a bit to create this lightly joyous, grooving atmosphere. Them Dave Allison drums are freakin crispy too. It creates a different kind of beauty compared to the prototype. Darando's emphasized vocals in the original inspired me to take in the lyrics more, and wonder what really went down when he yearns "Didn't I treat you right?". On the other hand, Dave Allison's take makes the statement sound more like a fleeting thought you have in the back of your head while going about your life and reflecting on things years later. Both are quite universal sentiments we bump into on our life's journey.
